Will you be doing it and when will you start?

Re: Sleep training......

  • around 4 months b/c my doctor suggests it and b/c i waited til 6 months with my daughter and should have done it earlier.  So I am starting at 4 months b/c I think that is why he is not taking good naps and waking up occasionally at night a couple times.  I am hoping it helps.  YOu?

  • We kind of started it last week, getting Molly to sleep was getting insane at least an hour every nap and at night of rocking/bouncing her to sleep.  Since we started sleep training/CIO (more fuss it out) she's down in 20 mins.  The first time it took 30 mins and it's never been longer. It's made a huge difference.

  • I'm debating.  Sleep has been tough lately and I am considering sleep training, but I don't think I'll start until a bit later.

  • Are you going in every few minutes, or just letting her completely cry it out?  I remember how stressful it was to hear your baby cry. I am not looking forward to it, but I know that it is necessary.  My daughter who I did sleep training with, sleeps awesome.  She is three now and we don't have sleep issues, except with naps. She is phasing out of them unfortunately.  I def. k now sleep training is a necessity!
  • We did it at 4.5mos.  Before we started DS wouldn't sleep in his crib, wanted to be bounced to sleep, and woke up constantly throughout the night needing to be picked up and bounced back to sleep.  He also wanted his paci constantly throughout the night.  By night 3 of Ferber he was putting himself to sleep, was done with the paci, and was down to 1 wake-up a night to eat.  SO worth it.

  • I only go in if  she's crying .  Sometimes she just chats herself to sleep, and then I don't go in because I wake her up when she sees me.

I go in at 3, 5 and 8 mins...I would go in at 10 but we've only gotten that far the first time...it sucks and I hate it.

  • Just started the Ferber Method yesterday.  It was really hard last night, but after 3 check-ins, he slept 8-1am for the first time in months!  He only got up once more in the early am.  Naps were so-so today using it.  Tonight I put him down, ready to wait the initial 10 mins and drinking a beer to get through the crying but he was asleep by 9mins.  Here's hoping it continues!  I just keep telling myself that I'm teaching him how to fall asleep on his own and it will help him.

  • We have been introducing self-soothing options... I really don't want it to come to CIO, and it won't until nothing else is working for us... J needs to fuss some before he falls asleep, but he escalates if he is left to cry at all.

We are also still swaddling, but looking to stop once he is better with his thumb or finding his paci.

Mostly we have been working with a soft blanket on his cheek... he likes to rub it in his face if his hands are free, or we lay him down on it with a little material up if he is swaddled.

It is hard, since he was a fussy baby (dairy allergy/intolerance) he needed a lot to get to sleep early on. I have to say he is very good at night though (we bedshare) and does put himself back to sleep a lot of times that he wakes up between bedtime and coming to bed. He also did a 2 hour nap in his crib today!

So yeah... sleep coaching more than training over here.

I think I'm going to start beginning of July.  DH is off 4th of July week and will be able to help.  I have Ferber's book so I plan on reading that over the next few weeks.

  • Anyone do it JUST for daytime naps?  I'm debating it.  LO lets herself go every single day until she's just miserable.  About 90% of the time I have to help her soothe by holding/rocking/music/swing. After all that, it's typically only for a 20-30 minute nap.

She's a great nighttime sleeper though.  We've never had a night of being up since 6 weeks **I'm talkin to you, 4 month wakeful!!**

  • Same here, but such an improvement in her naps/sleep.

Yeah, her naps are much better now. We were doing the 30 min nap thing and now we get at least an hour sometimes 2.  Nighttime is still a struggle she wakes up ever 2-3 hours still but we will get there.

I think she gets distracted by all the rolling.

  • You guys are inspiring me.  We had to retire the swing when DS almost managed to push himself out.  He's been sleeping well in that since about 3 months.  He's usually up after an hour at night in the crib and has never been a good day sleeper.  I've been reading Ferber's book and have been waiting for the right time.  I think we'll start next week.  I hope you guys keep posting updates. I'll be curious to see how it's going.  Smile

  • You ladies are inspiring me. My DD was a good sleeper until about a week and a half ago. Now she is up every 4 hours screaming bloody murder (until we give her a bottle) and crying for her paci in between those feedings. I'm exhausted and feel like I'm setting a bad habit by giving her the bottles at night but I just don't know what to do.

  • When LO was about two months old, I started letting her fuss/cry for 3-5 minutes before going to her when putting her down for a nap.  After the first day or two, she starting going down with only 1-2 minutes of fussing (no crying).  Since then (until daycare started this week, but that's a whole other issue), naps have been really easy, and she has started to sleep from 9:00ish to 4:30ish at night.

  • We did it over Memorial Day weekend. He'd been going to sleep in the swing (and napping there too) for months and I knew we'd have to wean him off that (and into the crib) before daycare started. I hated it but the Ferber method worked very well for our little guy. Only took a couple of nights. Now he chatters/fusses a little before he goes to sleep, and his naps are much longer too.
