Food Allergy

Any other FPIES babies on here?

We found out yesterday that A has FPIES. So far avacado, peas, and sweet potatoes have been trigger foods. Rice and oatmeal have not caused any reactions, but I am not going to chance it with barley (I was unaware of FPIES before trying the others). A is EBF which I am so thankful for now with this diagnosis. Any tips or advice would be greatly appriciated!!

  • I hate to sound stupid, what is FPIES, I would love to know more. As someone with Celiac I can understand food issues, and always try to be understanding of other food issues as well!

  • I've never heard of this one before so I clicked on the link you provided.  If dairy can be a big trigger- you'll probably need to pull it out of your diet if you are going to continue to breast feed.   I would probably pull the other foods from my diet as well.  Some babies with allergies (not sure how it translates to FPIES) are effected by what is/isn't in their mother's milk and others aren't.  You can always add food back in but if you are working to fix the initial problems- it's easier to pull it all out so you know exactly what/how much of what you are eating causes an issue.

  • Thanks for the info. I definitely agree, that foods that trigger your child should be pulled from your diet while breastfeeding, esp dairy.

This is actually not the case with FPIES. If you read more into it, the child has to directly injest the food for a reaction to happen. That is why many breastfeeding mothers do not find out about until the wean or start solids.

Not true. DD has FPIES to soy, dairy and peas and I was able to eat them when she was EBF. I didnt even know DD had anything wrong until we started solids.  FPIES is not a true allergy.  I eliminated it when my allergist (who I now think is a quack but for other reasons) told me too... but since it was diagnosed when DD was 8 months and I ate dairy and soy the whole time, I thought this was weird. I decided on my own to add it back in- and DD had no ill effects, even though if DD herself had the trigger foods, she'd vomit for hours.

OP-- FPIES is tough but there is support out there. This board on babycenter was actally very helpful to me- https://community.babycenter.com/groups/a4859345/fpies_food_protein_induced_enterocolitis_syndrome?   - there is  FAQ that can help. Best of luck.

    :)
