We are currently in the process of TTC #2. The IVF, a FET, is scheduled for 6/14. We have only two embies, both graded "fair." We are very torn as to how many of the two to transfer... IVF #1 was a day 3 transfer of 2 embies, resulting in a singleton pregnancy. The first time around we would have gladly welcomed twins but this time we are terrified of multiples. My heart says "the more the merrier" but my wallet is screaming "daycare for 3 children will break us." Although twins would be a tremendous amount of work, I am not afraid of that, our hesistation is purely financial. Also, these are now day five embies, so I am concerned that they are more "viable," for lack of a better term, than the embryos from IVF #1. I have discussed this with the RE extensively, but their answers are very clinical and they are afraid to seem as if they are advocating in either direction. One very valid point that the RE did make is that since the two are frozen together, if we only choose to transfer one, the second embryo would have to be re-frozen. Apparently success rate statistics for "re-frozen" embies are sketchy.
Sorry for the long post I am just so torn. I guess what I am looking for is more anecdotal comments/suggestions/help from ladies that may have been in my situation...
Re: Multiples??
Yikes...
So a few things I would consider;
1 - I personally would not re-freeze any embies.
2 - If you transfered one and it didn't stick, would you do another fresh cycle? Or will that be the end of your treatments?
3- Financially, there are ways to make it work. Instead of doing dc, you could do a nanny which may not be that much of a cost differential between 2 or 3 kids.
4- If all worked out, and you got your second singleton, are you done having babies?
4 Fresh IVF cycles + 1 FET where embies didn't survive the thaw = 2 perfect little men!
sFET 11/9/11 - Beta 11/18 BFP!
2) If one didn't stick, then we would be out of allotted funds for a fresh cycle. We set a budget for IVF and we both agreed not to exceed it. We are already in the $25,000 range.
3) That is a good point- I guess when I hear the word nanny I automatically think $$$$$, but with three the differential might be in our favor.
4) Yes we would be done... Our ultimate goal was always 2.
Depending on your daycare price, a nanny can be more cost-effective even for two. Just remember to account for paying the FICA taxes.
your age? and where's your endo at? (like, does this play a roll?)
Stage 4 endo... and I'm 31 this month, so the endo plays a roll, but the age does not. The RE just wanted us to transfer before 35, but that was fine with us because we were hoping for 2 about 2 1/2 to 3 years apart anyway.
Ok - I think I would do 2.
Good luck!

This! Good luck!
We were recently in a similar situation. We had FET #1 back in April and decided to transfer 2. Well, I wanted to transfer 2 and my H wanted to transfer 1. Given our history and my argument skills, I won that debate.
So we had 8 frozen 5 day blasts. Four had to be thawed in order to get 2 good viable ones (1 died in the first batch that was thawed, so they had to thaw another batch of 2 to get another). We ended up with 3 viable thawed embies, RE chose the best 2, and they refroze the last one.
I'm now pg with twins. I really never thought both would take. We transferred 2 during our fresh cycle and only one took there. I had also had a previous m/c. I figured our risk was low and that some of our embies just wouldn't take no matter how many we put back. But I was wrong.
FET #1 = BFP on 5/2011
