I just talked to my DH about your situation (also a science PhD), and he made a few good suggestions. Did you talk to anyone about this, even your DH? If so, do you have any email correspondence about it? Particularly if you corresponded using a school account, that will be a good record for you to show that you were acting to make this change and not vice versa. If there is correspondence on a school email account, they can pull everything up from the servers (because printed email is easily forged, thus proves nothing).
