NBR A Kindle or a Nook??

I am thinking about purchasing a reading device ( a completion of my Masters present, and my husband just bought Bose headphones)

Any thoughts on the two devices??  I know the Nook is in color and you can get magazines, but navigating and basic design?? Library???

  • I love my Kindle!

  • I love my nook. It's one of the first ones they came out with 2 years ago, but its been a great purchase. The nice thing about the nook is that you aren't limited to only one store to buy books from and you can share some of the books with others.
  • I went back and forth before purchasing my Kindle in December and I love it! I'd say just go to Target where you can play with the Kindle and then to BN for the Nook and see what you think. I just thought the Kindle was much more like a book and easier on the eyes to read, but the Nook had it's pluses too (main one for me was touch screen).

  • I love my nook!  I have the black and white one and my mom has the color one which she loves.  And it's nice that you can trade some books and borrow ebooks from the library, though by me they tend to not have the most recent books (so I buy those).

    Good luck!

  • My husband has a color Nook and LOVES it. Touch screen, you can invert the screen at night so the page is black and the words are white (or you could just dim the white screen), wifi is great, comes with tons of games, nice to surf the web in color, etc.

  • I love my Kindle!  I never have a problem finding books to download from the Amazon store, they have tons to pick from.  The screen is great!  I work at a computer all day, so I wanted something that wouldn't strain my eyes while on the train home from work.  The Kindle screen is perfect, it looks just like print in a real book.  I also love that I can read my Kindle anywhere, especially on the beach.  I'm not sure if the Nook screen has that problem, but that is one of the reason I didn't go with a tablet for my reader.

  • While I have never seen a Nook..I ADORE my Kindle!
  • Love love love my Nook color.  Not only do I love the color aspect, surfing the web from it is great and the childrens books with color pictures that you can either read or have read for you will come in handy.
  • I have the original Nook, no color, and I love it.  My parents each have the Kindle and they love theirs.  I think what it comes down to is do you want a touch screen or not because other than that they seem pretty much the same.

  • You can get magazines on the Kindle too, they just aren't color.  I have friends with the color Nook and they have a glare on their screen that is not present with my Kindle.

I love my Kindle and would highly recommend it!

  • If you like to read books in a comfortable position like curled up under a blanket or laying in bed and you like you hold the book with one hand then I would say stay away from the nook because it has a touch screen. You will accidently turn the page if you touch the screen. It will be annoying to always makes sure your hand is only on the edge. With the Kindle, you can hold it any way you like without your hand cramping up. I love that I can touch the screen especially since these things are so thin. Also, the realistic screen and the fact that it doesn't reflect light is awesome!

  • I really like my Kindle.  It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the latest color Nook, but I got it read book on, not play games and surf the net.  It's easy on the eyes, no glare when reading outside.  I think it's great.

I have the Nook Color, and I don't find this to be annoying at all, and rarely do I accidently touch the screen.

So with that said, LOVE my Nook Color.  You can download certain magazines, play Angry Birds, and like PP said, download children's books and the Nook will read it, or you can read it to your child.  Only downfall is that it's extremely difficult to read outside in the sun.  I read inside 99% of the time so that's not an issue for me.

  • I have a Nook Color and I love it!  It is really a cross between an e-reader and a tablet.  I surf the web on it probably more than I actually read books on it.  The nice thing about the Nook is that it can read all types of book formats and you can easily download books from the B&N store or check them out from libraries.  You don't have to worry about having the right file format like you do with the Kindle.

If you truly just want an e-reader, a b&w Nook or a Kindle might make more sense, but the Nook Color is really fun.

  • I have a kindle and love it.  There are tons of free books on amazon - new ones almost daily.  I have over 300 free books - that aren't the older classics - all newer books or self-published authors.  The color Nook is backlit - so you do get some eye fatigue looking at a backlit screen [like a computer].

The other thing to think about is that Barnes and Nobles isn't completely secure financially so they could go under like Borders did. I doubt amazon is going anywhere anytime soon, so I feel confident that I will always have my books available [the books you buy through amazon.com are automatically backed up there].

I don't think there will be a color kindle available anytime soon unless the eink technology advances.  But I personally just wanted it to read books and it does that beautifully.  I don't play games or surf the web on it - but I have my laptop for that.

You could also look at the kindle forum on amazon - there is always lots of advice on it and there are frequently posts of people comparing the 2.  As well as using the kindle app on other devices, like the ipad.

  • I love my Kindle! DH (who never buys anything over $50 without researching thoroughly) bought it for me for Christmas and I'm addicted. My mom loves hers too. I like that the screen doesn't glare and that it's not an LCD screen. After working on a computer all day, my eyes get tired and I like that my Kindle doesn't make it worse. Also, with the newer Kindles, you can share books like you can on the Nook.

I have the Nook Color and I love it. I read books, magazines, surf the web, listen to Pandora, store pics on it, put books for my son on it and more. It's more like a mini iPad than just an e-reader. You can adjust the brightness of the screen-- when I adjust it, I haven't had any trouble using it outside.

This is not exactly true-- it can read several different formats, but not all. There is a free program called Cailbre you can download which converts e-book files into different file formats-- so you can take a Kindle book and format it for the Nook.

One other thing to note about the Nook-- it allows you to highlight passages & make notes. It's not a feature I use, but my friend is in grad school and she uses it all of the time.

  • I LOOOVE my kindle. I always say its my favorite thing I own. The Nook looks nice, but I don't want the color screen. I enjoy the kindle because it looks like actually reading a book. I have a friend with the Nook and she wishes she got a Kindle. I haven't asked her why, though.Oh, and you can add a note or a highlight on the kindle as well.
