How bad is it that DD drinks from the hose?

I know you aren't supposed to let the little ones drink from the garden hose, but once DD discovered the joy of cold bubbly water on her tongue, she can't be stopped.

I installed a new garden hose in the area where she plays with the hose, and always flush it out, but should I put the breaks on this behavior or just let it go under the old "I drank 20,000 gallons of hose water a summer as a child and lived to tell about it" rule?

  • Ours Drink from it, but maybe it is because I spend too much time looking for old posts to monitor their behavior.... They seem to be fine. In reality we do flush it first.

  • I think how you proceed depends on her personality. For my DS, if I explained to him that the water isn't good for drinking and that we only drink from the faucet, water fountain, etc., he would listen and stop doing it. But I know that for other kids that kind of thing doesn't work. If she's not the type to be reasoned with, just make sure you flush it thoroughly and maybe gently redirect her when you can.

  • My DS drinks the hose water, the pool water - basically any water in which he's playing. Stopping this behavior at this age would require putting an end to water play (which he loves), so I've decided to not worry about it :)
  • If my DS did it, I'd buy a hose that is safe for potable water (ie one without lead) and let him go.  You can only control so much!
