Purchase a Pump

I've been using/renting a pump from the hospital, the Medela Lactina Select.  I need to return it soon so I'm researching pumps to purchase.  Can you tell me what I should be looking for in a pump?  I'll be using it at work mostly so not only does it need to be easy to use but convenient to transport.  What pump do you have and why do you like it?

Re: Purchase a Pump

  • I had the original double electric Lansinoh at first and then I got the Affinity Lansinoh and I love it. It has a let down option and it does not hurt at all. The original did would make my nipples very swollen and hurt. I like the affinity bkz it works great and was about 150.00 which is a lot for a pump but better than the 300-400 I was looking at.

  • I have the Medela Freestyle and I absolutely love it.  The biggest benefit is that it doesn't have to be hooked up to a power source (because it runs on it's own battery), and it's small which makes it much more portable.  I've even used it while driving - it can fit proped up in my cup holder (a little crazy, I know, but I travel quite a bit for work).  I also like that I can clip it to the waistbelt that it comes with and am completely hands free and mobile.  I also rented for the first month to make sure that I would stick with BF and I didn't notice any difference in the suction than with the Medela Symphony that I rented.  You will spend way more time hooked up to your pump than you would probably like to think about - so make sure you get one that you'll be happy with long term if you plan on pumping for a while.

  • I think I used the same Medela when I was in the hospital.  I used a Medela PISA and loved it!  Plus, the parts are compatible.  I needed much larger shields which the hospital provided and I could continue to use them with the PISA.  The bag it's in looks like a normal bag and it's pretty easy to transport.  Medela also has GREAT customer service.
