Food Allergy

Epipen question?

DS just got his epipen and it says to keep it at room temp.  We are going on vacation in 2 weeks and planning on doing alot of outdoor activities...like amusement park, beach...sightseeing.  We will be in NC and I think it will be pretty hot....Where do you keep the epipen so it doesn't get too hot...do you bring it everywhere?  For example, I don't think we need it at the beach since he won't be exposed to anything...but we probably need it at the amusement park.

TIA

Re: Epipen question?

  • you do need it at the beach (IMO). you need it everywhere where your child with allergy is.   People bring food the beach and it can easily be left behind under the same sand your child is playing with.

Did your epipen come with a case? just leave it in that and keep it away from direct sunlight. I had the same question recently and had a pharmasist check my epipen to make sure it's still ok.  He said that it's ok as long as the liquid doesnt change colors or looks foggy.  We had it in 90 degree weather but never in direct sunlight.

  • As long as you keep it in the shade, it should be fine.  I agree with PP too in that you should bring it to the beach with you.

  • Take it with you everywhere. You need to have it handy in case he comes into contact with any allergens. I say it should be fine as long as it is not in direct sunlight.

  • I have a carry case that I bought at the Target dollar spot. I put 4 EpiPens in it and carry it wherever I go. You can never have too many spares. I put red duct tape in the shape of a red cross on the bag so that people know its where my medicine is in case I am incapacitated.

Where ever your child goes so does the epi pen.  We even took ours on the water slides at Disney.  Just keep it in a cool place like shade of your bag.

that just remained me that  i need to buy a waterpoof case b/c we're going to a water park soon!  I plan on taking it on the rides!!! (i always fear that the ride will start and the kid that just sat in my sons seat had peanuts and he goes into an ana reaction during the ride)

  • Thanks for all the info!  I guess we will be bringing it to the beach (and everywhere we go)!  We go to the allergist on Thursday and my pedi prescribed it over the phone so no one has told me anything except DS is allergic to soy, eggs, and peanuts...and we need an epipen.
