I am frustrated as my baby has been on Nystatin for over 2 weeks with what appears to be no progress.
After doing some reading online it seems Nystatin tends NOT to be effective in infants typically anyhow AND causes gastro problems/pain (she already suffers from gas). And since we have been giving her the Nystatin she has had some serious green, neon poo that is very runny.
I too had thrush - I guess passed to my breast. However, after my doctor gave me diflucan, the intense nipple and breast pain I had went away within 2 days.
If you battled thrush and got rid of it, what worked for your baby?
FYI - my baby only has a white tongue, no patches on the inside of her mouth, lips etc.
Re: Anyone successfully get rid of infant thrush?
Our pedi prescribed oral fluconazole for my DD, and I was simultaneously treated with the one-shot fluconazole pill.
My DD still has a white tongue, but it's just breastmilk that stays there 24/7
Also, Whole Foods sells infant probiotics in the refrigerated section. I recently had mastitis, and I took probiotics and gave the infant version to DD to avoid dealing with thrush all over again. It might be a good supplement for both of you to the diflucan if you are struggling to eliminate thrush.
GL!
It wipes off pretty easily. Because it's thick (and I just had the antibiotics), I use the rough side of a damp washcloth to see if it can be wiped off. If it's thick and doesn't seem to want to come off, then it's more likely to be thrush.
My DD had her first pedi appointment on a Friday, and was examined and thrush was never mentioned. We went back the following Monday to check her weight and I told her that her tongue was thrush white, turns out she did have thrush. We treated her with diflucan oral immediately. I actually never got it in my breasts or nipples, but I did get a really awful rash all over my chest. My OB told me to use clotrimazole 1% cream on my chest for the rash and on my nipples preventatively.
DD's white tongue cleared up in 2 days, we completed the 2 weeks of medication, I never had any breast or nipple pain or symptoms, and she never had any GI issues. So our combination of catching it really early, diflucan, and clotrimazole was really effective and easy... though I have some concern that one of us still has it and may pass it back and forth.
I also had luck with this with DD.
My DS has had thrush three times. The first time (while still in NICU), Nystatin seemed to clear it up. The second two times, Nystatin didn't make a dent in it and we had to use oral Diflucan, which cleared it up within a few days. If he gets it again, we'll go straight to the Diflucan. He also got it really bad, white patches on roof of mouth, cheeks and tongue, so there was no doubt that we should try and treat it. Diflucan is also SO much easier to give (once a day for 10 days) as opposed to 4 times a day, swabbing in the mouth.
Also be sure to boil nipples, pacis and anything else you might use that would go in the mouth. Good luck!
Same here! She has been on the medicine for five days now, and it does not seem to be clearing up either. We go for her check up in one week, however, I might call in sooner.
I too, read a lot that Nystatin does not work very well either. I wonder why they prescribe it then.
Luckily, I am FF, so it has not passed on to me.
