Allergy Sufferers

Are your allergies worse this year? I'm on Zyrtec and it's not working. I take it at night and some days by noon I am miserable. ds is on claritin and I can tell when it starts to taper off. What do you take? can I take something else when mine starts to wear off? Zyrtec is supposed to be 24 hours and I'm not sure if I can/should take something else. I'm calling the dr. in the morning. I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same problems!

Re: Allergy Sufferers

  • It's been a tough allergy season all around from what I've heard.

I've had a lot of luck with local honey. I have a teaspoon or two every morning and I've only had to take my meds for about a week or so this spring. The only time it was hard was when it suddenly got warm and EVERYTHING burst into bloom around here at the same time.

  • You could add a nasal steroid spray like flonase and/or an eye drop like zaditor. My don takes zyrtec and flonase daily. The flonase has significantly helped. I take claritin and zaditor used as needed (on bad itchy eye days)
  • Have you tried using a nasal rinse bottle?  My DS and DH use these regularly right now and have been able to avoid taking any medication.

I do have one of these! we'll try that tomorrow.  and lari, I think I do remember someone saying something about local honey. thanks!

  • The doc I went to tonight told me that it is the worst season in the past 5 years!  And he practically lectured me on why I wasn't taking my allergy meds regularly.  I ended up at an urgent care place after getting a fever this afternoon with no other symptoms but allergy ones.  So, he put me on a nasal spray 2 times a day as well as the Allegra D and since I was so bad off, he gave me steroids for 2 days to head off a possible sinus infection and said that the fever was why it was called hay fever.

I'd recommend also using a sinus rinse and he also talked about air filters in cars and houses... and showering to get it out of your hair and body each night before bed.

    And I thought I was doing well....hmmmmmm
