Took away the bottle... now he won't drink! help

Okay ladies I need some advice.  I took away DS's bottle.  He hasn't had one all morning but he will not drink milk from a sippy cup.  He has had nothing to drink all morning.  He has usually had 2-3 wet diapers and he has only had one semi-damp diaper all day.  I don't want him to get dehydrated.

Any advice?

When he wake up from nap I am going to give him a sippy with milk and if he doesn't take it I will try a sippy with water (which he has never taken either).  He will take a sippy that has 1/2 juice, 1/2 water but I know he needs the milk, right?

Please help!

  • My DS is head strong like his momma.  He went two days without drinking anything and the doctor wanted me to take him to the ER for dehydration but I thought I'd try the bottle again and he drank like a champ.  We were stuck back on bottles for 2 months and just got rid of the bottle this past week when I discovered the NUK training cup.  Maybe try a few different cups before you give up all together.

  • Be strong.  I wasn't and my son still gets a bottle at nap and bedtime.  If I could do it all over again, I'd wait out the tantrums he had over his bottle because the tantrums of a 1 year old do not even slightly compare to the tantrums of a 2 year old.  The only thing that is my saving grace is that his pedi is unconcerned about it.  His teeth are healthy, which is the main concern that comes from a bottle.

If he eats healthy, he really doesn't need the milk. I'd give him what he wants from a sippy and keep offering the milk daily until he takes it.

  • Personally i think the 'off the bottle at 1' rule is very over rated.

we ditched them at 18 months. -- I know for future knowledge to start milk in the sippy with my little guy sooner.

DD refused milk in a cup- but would drink everything else. she finally got it around 18 mon. Not something i sweated over.

  • He will not dehydrate.  Seriously DD went a good day and a half without drinking but would eat fruit and other things.  There is liquid in them.  Ditch the bottle.

I agree.  We didn't even try with DS until he was 2 and was well-established drinking from his cup (he drank everything).   As I type this, DD (13 months) just drank her first sippy of milk and I'm surprised because the only reason I even gave it to her in the cup is that I was playing with DS during her nap and forgot I had no clean bottles!  Good luck to you whatever you decide, but I wouldn't push to get rid of the bottle so hard if your LO isn't ready; he's barely 1.

  • Every kid is different.  DD was off the bottle at 9 months and DS at 12 months.  My daycare provider had a lot to do with that though.  As a first time mom I never would have given her a sippy at 9 months on my own.  Anyway, I personally hated washing bottles so I was all for it and that prompted me to do it earlier with DS.  I say the sooner the better.

If he'll take 1/2 juice 1/2 water in a sippy, by all means give that to him if you're concerned about dehydration (normally I'd say don't even worry about it, but with 1/2 the country in the middle of an epic heat wave I might be concerned about it myself).

I'm not a big believer that kids really need much cow's milk (and my pedi agrees with me), as long as they're getting plenty of good fats and calcium from other sources (does he eat cheese/yogurt/green veggies/etc?).

That said, it takes most kids a few days at least to adjust to giving up bottle and taking milk from a cup. I certainly wouldn't panic after 1/2 day...just keep giving it to him and he'll come around.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies!  I ended up giving him a bottle twice today. Once when he woke up from nap and once before bed.  Right now I just don't see the harm in him having a bottle twice a day! My first son was off the bottle at 9 months.  I will keep trying the milk in the sippy and eventually I am sure he will give up the bottle.  I mean how many 20 year olds do we see walking around with a bottle hanging out of their mouths?
