Gained 9 Pounds in a Month???

Wow - anyone else have this problem? Apparently I gained 9 pounds from the time of my last appointment, which was 4 weeks ago. Not good.... And I thought I was doing so well! Total weight gain after 4 months is 15 pounds, yuck!!!

Re: Gained 9 Pounds in a Month???

  • I've had a similiar experience where I havent gained much weight and then in a single week I gained 4 pounds.  I havent gaine any weight since that week but have kept it on for the most part.  I am not too concerned about it.  In reading all of the various weight posts on these boards it seems every woman's body is different and puts on the pregnancy weight at a different pace.  Remember that your blood is increasing in volume, and your breasts are probably increasing in size.  Both of these cause weight gain that you really have no control over and its perfectly healthy.

  • Thank you - that is exactly what my husband has been saying too. It just didn't help when my doctor asked, "Do you think this is right? Did you really gain 9 pounds in the past month?" And I realize I should NOT do that every month - but I feel so bad about it!

  • 2 months ago i gained 1 lb and the dr told me i wasnt gaining enough.... the following month i gained 8 lbs ! and my dr said "well its 1p  - so its right after lunch, dont worry" to which i responded.... "i didnt eat yet"! lol - anyway it all evens out at the end. I gained 35 lbs with my first. Im about 115 not prego - so any weight sounds like a lot :)
  • I had a similar thing happen, although I'm still  not really gainign weight.

I went in for my appointment on May 18 and was up 1 lbs, but on my May 20 (U/S) appointment I was up 4lbs! The woman asked, "has it been three weeks since your last appointment" I said "yes in embarassment" BUT now I hover between 2lbs-4lbs gained total. I think sometimes our bodies just are heavier at certain times than others. I go in for my 16 week appt tomorrow June 10 and In am curious if their scale says anything different than mine at home. After this appointment I don't have one till July 12 and that is for my anatomy scan and heart echo.

  • I gained 8 lbs in a month, and I'm pretty sure 4 of those pounds were gained over Memorial Day weekend.  I'm serious--we were in a wedding and went to a few bridal party events where lots of food was served (in addition to the wedding reception) and I went to a huge Memorial Day BBQ.  My doctor wasn't concerned at all because my overall weight was on track.  She actually didn't even mention it until I asked specifically about my weight gain.
  • My last appointment (4 weeks ago) I had gained 10 lbs... now I've gained 23 according to their scale this morning... I'm not concerned at all, and neither was my doctor...

  • It's gonna happen and there's not always anything you can do about.  Towards the end of my first pregnancy I gained like 7 lbs in a week and my dr. just pointedly told me that there was no way I gained 7 actual lbs, that it was likely a lot of water retention and not to worry about it.  Try to look at the overall picture.  I typically gain around 40 lbs when I'm pregnant and I'm on my way to that with this one.  With my first I ate terribly - I was young.  Lots of ice cream and it was during lent so I hit all the local fish frys LOL!  This time I'm craving tons of salad and watermelon.  I gained 8 lbs over 4 weeks a couple appointments ago and I've been eating really well.  I can either freak out about it or try to be healthy and accept that weight gain is just part of the pregnancy process.
  • I've gained 11 pounds in 3 weeks - 6 of them were from one week alone. At 20 weeks I've gained 30 pounds. Luckily I have a great midwife. The baby is measuring ahead by 9 days, DS1 was a big child, and DH is 6'3", so she said to just look at the big picture - I could just be growing a large child! She did say though that I  might consider watching my carbs and making sure I get some exercise in case GD is a factor (since the baby is measuring big). She brought that up as a point of health though, not that she was worried about the weight gain at all. She basically said to just enjoy my pregnancy :)

I lost weight at first then leveled out for a month then within 4 weeks (last month) I gained 6 or 7 lbs.

  • I gained 10 in a month; next time I go in my doctor said that she wanted to check my thyroid.
  • I don't weight myself :) I told my doctor to tell me if I was gaining too much or too little. Otherwise for me ignorance is bliss :)

I'm right there with ya! I've gained 30lbs so far and I'm in the 19th week. This is my first baby, i'm naturally small but my DH is 6'3" also and everyone in his family is tall too so I might be growing a giant.
