Peanut/Tree nut allergies- sprinkles?

Have you found any "safe" ones? I thought the Festival ones by Castle Brand might be good. One kind that I found over the holidays says made in a peanut-free facility, but the kind I just got at Hobby Lobby just says peanut-free so I emailed. Ugh. Shared facility, so they can't really say.

I have been using the Wilton brand. Last time I called they say that they mark "may contain" if their sprinkles (and other baking products) are manufactured in the same place and their nut products. It is always good to call every once in awhile though. Not sure if their products are all over, but they are here in the Chicago area.

I had heard that Wilton is kind of famous for cross contamination. I use India Tree but you have to be careful. Only the Sparkling Sugars are dairy, egg, nut free and made in a dedicated facility.

I feel crappy because it never even occurred to me to check the sprinkles!!!!!

Evidently a lot of confections use egg whites so if you have an egg allergic LO you have to be careful. Also, a lot of baking involves nuts so cross contamination is usally the issue, not necessarily nuts as an actual ingredient.

My DS had an Ana reaction after making cookies with Wilton sprinkles. I would definitely avoid them if you have a kiddo with peanut allergies.

The sprinkles we used did not have a may contain label on the ones that triggered his anaphylactic reaction.

I just checked on of our sprinkles things and it turns out it's Wilton's brand. I just knew we got them from Walmart and DS hasn't had a problem with them. I just checked though and realized it does have the warning. The Betty Crocker ones we have don't have any warnings on it and DS also did fine with those.

I am so sorry that happened to your DS! Thank you for letting me know about Wilton. Just when you think something is safe...ends up it is not.

I'm in the "feel like crap because I never thought to check sprinkles" group. good thing he didn't like the icing I put on his safe cupcakes anyway. Now I'll have to check what I have.

I am so sorry that happened to your DS! Thank you for letting me know about Wilton. Just when you think something is safe...ends up it is not.

It was from this incident that I learned to always, always, always call the manufacturer to verify everything!
