things in baby's mouth questions

Hey ladies!

Okay, I am back with mom-related questions. Quinn is now in the stage where he puts everything in his mouth and is verrry drooly (preparing for teething? my mom got her first tooth at three months and so did my brother!) So, I was wondering:

1) how do you clean hard toys? and teethers? (we only have a very dinky dishwasher, no sanitize setting)

2) how do you clean soft/plush toys?

I also am getting ready to try feeding him some food at four months. Since he has reflux, they think it might help. Since he has had constipation issues and only goes poop every three days or so, we won't be starting with the rice cereal. The pedi recommended squashes/carrots/green beans. So, here are my questions there:

1) how did you introduce solids? one food at a time? how runny? plain or mixed with formula/breastmilk?

2) what feeding accessories do you recommend to make life easier? (I ordered some little trays, a spoon that squeezes servings, a bowl with masher, and those little mesh bags so he won't choke on things) Anything else?

Thank you all so much in advance!

Lena has reflux too with crazy constipation from the formula (Enfamil AR is the only thing that stays down- and "down" with a reflux baby is all relative!). We were doing apple juice + formula during the day and she would still poop clay rocks (and she'd scream when she went), but it kept her going once a day. Once we added solids, the apple juice wasn't enough to keep things moving. Lena now drinks prune/apple juice 2x a day and has prunes for breakfast almost daily. We're still trying to balance prunes and blowout diapers ;)

For the same reasons, we started on oatmeal and have barley, but haven't tried it yet. If I give her rice cereal or apples/bananas, I just make sure I also give her prunes so that those don't constipate her!

We've found that the solids stay down (mostly) and she just seems more content because she has a full belly for a bit longer than with just formula.

    Good luck!

  • I clean the hard toys with Wet Ones.  They claim to kill 99% of germs.  I give things a wipe down about once a week.  The plastic teethers that go in the freezer - I wash those just with hot water.  You could clean with a bleach solution, but I like how fast the Wet Ones are.

I've had quite a bit of success putting plush toys in the washer and then the dryer without any damage.  I put those in to clean as soon as I see they are getting a little "matty" from all the spit.

I run hard toys through the dishwasher every so often and wash soft ones in the washer, but air dry them- the crinkly ones will loose their crinkly sound if you run them through!

  • I just rinse DSs gym toys/rattles under hot water from the kitchen sink every so often Embarrassed  We do have a water filter/sofenter though...if that makes a difference.  As for soft plush/toys, I'm seriously beginning to think I'm depriving this child- he has 'em, but I have yet to pull them out, so I'm no help in that department...same goes for solids- we're not there yet.  .
