Eye Exams?

I've read how your eyesight can change in pregnancy, but I am on my last pair of contacts so theres no way I'll make it to August. My prescription is over the year mark so I will have to have an eye exam. I hope my prescription isn't too different, I would hate to order contacts and then have them not work after the pregnancy. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Eye Exams?

  • I am in a similar situation. If your prescription is different, may you could just order a few pair to get you through August? It'll be a pain to have to go back again for another prescription, but at least then you won't have a bunch of wasted contacts...

  • Maybe talk to your eye doctor about it? I'm sure this is has come up before. Take the exam and maybe if the prescription is drastically different then your old one then maybe he'll let you just order a couple of boxes to get your through August?
  • Thanks ladies, I am definitely going to ask that, and yes if my prescription is very different i'll just order 1 or 2 boxes to get me through.

  • Dr's know how to deal with this, and can tell the difference b/w pregnancy related and normal changes in vision. Typically your eyes (and prescription) won't change drastically for a long period of time with pregnancy.

But if it is pregnancy related changes, you'll still have to go back and get a new rx after you have the baby. Insurance may not pay for 2 eye exams in one year, as well as any contacts/glasses benefits you may have. Ask for samples to get you through the next couple months! Try not to pay for them until after August.

  • I went to the eye doctor last month bc I was out of contacts.  My eyes have been the same for years and actually stayed the same..I heard about eyes changing alot during pregnancy too.   I commented on it to the Dr. and he said unless you have Gestational Diabetes chances are your eyes will stay about the same.   GL, hopefully you'll end up like I did and not have a big change.

Good to know. I hope mine stays the same because I really need to order new lenses for my glasses too (mine are super old and very scratched). I made an appt for an exam this afternoon so I'll have to see how it all ends up working out :P Thanks everyone for your comments! If need be I'll see if I can get samples til August!

  • I just had my eye exam on Monday and let the doctor know (as if she couldn't tell...) that I was expecting. Mine was exactly the same, but I had a friend that had blurry vision starting in the third tri so I was a little worried. Have you had any vision problems? If so, you might see if they can just renew your prescription for a few months and then go back in afterward. My doctor also told me that often breast feeding can make it so your eyes are sensitive and can't wear contacts so keep that in mind too...ugh!
