Name Recognition

When do babies start to recognize/understand their own name. A newsletter I got says it happens around 3 months but I haven't noticed it yet. Has anyone's baby turned their head to their name? it might be hard for Addison cause I have about 50 nicknames for her. But I do try to point at things and name it for her.

  • I haven't noticed it either.  He does smile when I say his name, but I think it's because I'm smiling too.  I was wondering when this is supposed to happen.

  • I got that newsletter too! I haven't noticed it yet either. I tried several times to call out "Parker". Sometimes he'd look just because he heard my voice... other times he'd just ignore me because he was focusing elsewhere. I'm excited for him to respond to his name...
  • I said Rory to her last night and she turned and looked at me, but like others, I'm not sure if it was at her name or because I was talking to her.

  • Really, 3 months? I would have never guessed that.  DS didn't really recognize it until he was closer to 6 months.  I also had tons of nicknames for him so maybe I delayed it.

i'm pretty sure i read somewhere on babycenter that it usually happens around 5 or 6 months. 3 months sounds awfully early.
  • My LO has started to recognize his name.  He's only 10 weeks old, but I think it's because I make a point of saying his name to him several times per day... that ad not a lot of words end in X so it's probably easier for him to recognise.
