Hello. I'm sorry again that things are so hard. I won't tell you to not worry about the test results because I know that is impossible. My son (Daniel) is just about 10 months. He was 8lbs 13oz when he was born but didn't stay big. He never lost weight but dropped in the growth charts. My ped was watching his weight and we've always gone in monthly for weight checks. When he fell off she suggested we do some blood tests. We didn't do the fecal/urine because it's hard to get the urine and we figured we would hold off on that.
It turned out that one of his hormone levels is low, or in the very low normal end. She referred us to an endocrinologist. I believe that's who you would see if it's a thyroid issue as well. He doesn't think he has a deficiency, but we're going to check his blood again in a few weeks and we'll go back to him in September. He thought his weight might be causing the low level. When I went back to the ped she suggested we give Daniel pediasure as a supplement. I BF and try to make mostly organic food for him so I wasn't crazy about it. I gave him 4oz and it upset his stomach so I don't want to give that to him anymore. I ended up seeing the nutritionist on staff in the endo's office and she has given me ideas for foods and amounts to try with him to get his weight up.
My ped was watching him but didn't do the tests until he slipped off the charts. Maybe that's why your ped didn't do it sooner? No one thinks there's really anything wrong with Daniel - this is all just being cautious. Before we went for the bloodwork the pediatrician said that if there was really something wrong there would likely be other signs of it. The endocrinologist told me that as well and so did the nutritionist.
Did your LO lose a lot of weight? Is your family small in general? What did the ped say the next step would be? Did they suspect low growth hormone or anything else specifically?
Re: ***dulcinea03***
Thank you. Jules lost about 3oz since she'd been seen on 5/9/11 for her 15mo well baby visit. So not a ton, but when you're 16 months old and only 15lb7oz, people start taking notice. She was early, IUGR, and weighed 4lb2oz at birth. So she's never been on the growth charts, but has now fallen off her growth curve. She was found to be anemic at 12 months, and has been on iron supplements since.
Small isn't a term to describe my family- I'm 5'8", and the shortest member of my immediate family. DH is 6'2" and his family is tall as well.
Right now I don't know our next step- they're running a full CBC, metabolic panel, full iron absorbtion panel, fecal fatty test, and a few others I'm drawing a blank on right now. That is giving us a baseline, and we're meeting with her ped on Tuesday to go over those results. From there, I expect some referrals to specialists based on those results. The pediatrician didn't guess as to what could be going on until he gets the tests back. So right now we're just playing the waiting game.
Make sure you talk to your own pediatrician about the results. I spoke to someone who wasn't up on our situation because I wanted the results immediately and she pretty much scared the hell out of me. The endocrinologists I called had really long waiting lists and that might be the case with other kinds as well. So once you look into the ped's recommendations see if you can get them to call and make the appointment. I was offered appts 2 months out. Luckily I had a friend that knew one of them and I got in in less than a week.
All I can say is try not to worry about lost time. Mind didn't run any tests until Daniel fell off his curve either. It is likely what they have to wait for. It's so stressful I'm sure they don't want to do anything until they really see that happen. Keep me updated okay? If it's just a weight thing we can share food tips. I'll be thinking of you...
