3rd Trimester

CP: Growth u/s yesterday=worried

My fundal height was measuring small so I was sent for a growth u/s.  Most measurements were a few days to a week behind.  No big deal.  The estimated weight was 5lbs 15oz.  DS was 6lbs 7oz at birth so I expect to have a baby on the small side.  The measurement that is really worrying me is the head circumference.  It measured 2 weeks behind and isin  the 2nd percentile.  There was another head measurement (biparietal diameter-the measurement from one side of the head to the other) that measured in the 50th percentile.  My doctor said that everything was perfect.  I told him that I was really worried about the head circumference and he said I have nothing to worry about especially since the other head measurement was 50%.  Also, the head is down but not engaged, so it's not squished yet.

Of course, I googled small head circumfernce and I'm thinking the worst.  I even asked my doctor about mental retardation and he said no and acted like I was crazy for not believing that everything was fine.  I just don't understand how the 2nd percentile is fine.

I couldn't sleep last night.  I am a worried wreck now.  Should I call the dr. back and ask more questions or for a second opinion?  I know there is nothing that can be done and I only have 2 1/2 weeks until my c/s but I feel like I am going to a wreck for the next 2 weeks.

  • My DS's head was measuring small as well, and when he was born he was perfectly healthy. He just has a small head. Don't worry, your lo is probably just fine.

  • If your Dr. isn't worried about it, I wouldn't be worried either.  If there was a major concern, they'd probably send you for more testing, so don't stress.

  • Somebody has to be in the 2nd percentile. =) I'm sure things are perfectly fine. If it makes you feel any better I just had an ultrasound last week at 36 & 5 as well and babe was measuring 6lbs 1oz. Every measurement was 1-2 weeks smaller with the exception of her head....which was measuring 2 weeks ahead! I had to laugh because all of my babies have had big heads, it's just the way we make them. Ultrasound measurements can be (and usually are) so off anyway. Take a deep breath and relax. Nothing good comes from looking for trouble.
  • do not stress...it should not be cause for alarm.

My LO is 9 months and her head is in the 5th percentile and has been since birth (you will be thankful for a small head when LO crowns...lol) and she has hit every milestone ahead of schedule.  My DS is 9 and he had a small head too....he is in the gifted and talented program....a small head means nothing unless they do not hit their milestones....plus ultrasounds are not 100% accurate.  they told me DD was measuring 36weeks 5 days when i gave birth at 39 weeks 2 days and she was born 6lbs 14oz 19inches and my BF was told her baby was going to be 10lbs plus and she had a 7lb 10oz baby
