any iMovie pros?

I am converting all my Flip videos over to iMovie b/c my Flip died & I want to use iMovie for editing from now on... But to do this, Flip creates a copy & then I have to import that copy into iMovie. Therefore, on my hard drive right now I have THREE copies of all the movies that I've exported so far and the startup disk is full. I have no idea which ones I should delete though- one copy does not appear to have a file extension, the 2nd is .mov and the third is .mp4   Which one does iMovie use, so I know which to keep? I'm so nervous about losing all this video! I'm going to back up on my external HD but I don't want to backup 3 copies of each one either...
