Hi - I am popping over here to see if anyone has any sort of info on milk intolerance/allergy or insight on what I am noticing with my 2.5 year old. He was on formula since about 6 weeks without issue, whole/2%/1% organic milk since 1 year...and I haven't noticed anything too out of the ordinary. But I am noticing more really really nasty poops...not diarrhea, but still very soft, more yellow and rank as rank can be. If he isn't changed immediately he gets a unbelievable diaper rash. A couple of months ago I noticed a very very light rash on his cheeks - very little bumpies. They haven't really gone away - but definitely seem worse some days. I looked at the rest of his body and noticed some pin-prick sized flesh colored bumps in quite a few places.
A month ago we took him off most dairy for a few days - he is a HUGE milk drinker. And I don't know if it was a coincidence or not - but he was like a different kid, behavior-wise. I have noticed when he gets these poops he's a lot more whiney and just pulls on us without being able to tell us why.
Also - he is a bit dev't delayed. He sees a speech therapist and OT twice a week for sensory issues.
We have made an appt to see his ped about this...but I just thought I would see if anyone else had any insight. I mean, something is up with his poop - it isn't normal. But whether the bumpies and behavior have anything to do with it - I'm not sure.
But again - he's 2.5 and I haven't really noticed an issue before now. Yeah - he would get really bad diaper rash here and there. His skin has always been on the dryer side...and he is delayed in speech and other dev't way and has some sensory issues. I am just not sure if something would show up now - this far into toddlerhood.
My SIL's twins have VERY severe food allergies so she is up to speed on a lot of info. She mentioned that her allergist said kids can have a threshold where they can tolerate certain foods - but once they go over they can show a reaction. Not sure if this is the case here - but I can't help but wonder.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!! TIA!
Re: Intro/Questions
regarding the rash, with the heat in full force, it could also be a heat rash. But it wouldn't hurt having him tested to see if he is allergic to milk/soy. Most likely your pedi will want to avoid an allergist so you may need to find one on your own and just go. I would actually talk to your pedi about seeing a GI first.
It's totally normal for a child to develop allergies at that age. I was told that kids that have food allergies, sometimes the allergy can triple between the age 2 and 5 before it goes down. So maybe he always had a milk allergy but it was super low so now with his age it's coming out.
Also, not sure if this may be your case or not regarding dev't delays and allergies. My friend who has 2 children. (now 4 and 5 - i think). Both have dev't issues.. last year she finally switched pedi's b/c he was ignoring her constant cries that something is wrong. Her new pedi tested her kids for milk/soy allergies -and the younger one (3 at the time) showed that he's allergic to milk and soy. She removed milk/soy from his diet and a few days later he said mama for the first time. So that triggered more testing. She found out that the milk was creating yeast in his belly. She told me it was like an adult drinking alcohol and getting drunk, his brain isn't functioning right b/c he's "drunk" on milk.. he's been dairy/soy free for almost a year and he's showing amazing progress. He's also on anti-fungal meds to get rid of the yeast for the past year so i'm sure that helped.
So if I was you, i would take milk/soy out of his diet for a few weeks and see how he does. (60% of kids allergic to milk are also allergic to soy.. and besides, soy is re-engineered these days so it's not the healthiest thing to give)
i strongly believe that a diet has so much to do with everything!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.
It's so hard to know what to look for - and I thought something like this would be really obvious...and maybe it will seem so after we have his diet figured out. And thanks for the info on soy - we did buy some because I thought that would be the go-to after a milk allergy is suspected...but I will try some other options. A friend of mine gives her son Hemp milk - but I am unsure of the reason.
That's very interesting about your friend - and I am so curious to see if that is what is happening with DS. We have gone through a lot with Early Intervention testing and I have read a bit about diet and development but maybe I need to dig into it a little more prior to meeting with his doctor.
Thanks again!
My DD is also 2.5 and was just diagnosed with a milk allergy last week. She also has a peanut allergy that we've known about for a year. When tested last year for food allergies, only the peanut allergy showed up and not the milk allergy. The milk allergy is mild, but is pretty new so it's unclear if it will get worse or what.
Her symptoms are different from your LO's, but were bad enough that they prompted us to get her tested. For about a month, she would randomly get violently ill (vomiting) and the only commonality for any of the instances was dairy consumption. As it turns out, her dairy intake was most likely the culprit. They administered a few other tests, including some anatomy scans, and the only thing flagged was the dairy.
I can't speak to the developmental issues at all, but if you have concerns about a food allergy or intolerance I would recommend talking to your pedi and getting a reference to a pediatric allergist. They can do a blood draw and figure out what he's allergic to (if anything), or if it's something entirely different. That way you don't have to unnecessarily take away foods or anything like that.
Best of luck!
