PCOS & BFing issues anyone?....

I was originally using the Medela Swing and the LC thought that the issue was the pump.  So, she had me rent the hospital grade Medela Symphony...same one that I used in the hospital.  Well, that hasn't helped much either.  I'm lucky if I can get HALF an ounce the ENTIRE day from pumping.  I also started taking Fenugreek, anise tea and having more oats (oatmeal, oat water) but nothing is really increasing my flow.  We've tried kangarooing all day, having him close by when I pump, having him latch (he refuses and turns beat red & purple whenever he's by my boob!), I can just go on and on.  I've tried it all and I'm at my wits end.  I'm really close to giving up unless someone can help me or has a phenomenal story to keep my hopes up.  I don't think that its gonna happen....HELP!!!!!!!!

Some info:  Not sure if any of this is also contributing to my low flow but here's some more info in case it makes a difference...

My illnesses: Crohn's disease, PCOS, hypothyroid & hypertension

Meds: Nexium, Mercaptopurine (6MP), Toprol XL, Methyldopa, Nifedipine (Aldomet), Metformin & Levothyroxine

  • I have PCOS, but I haven't had any issues. I've heard that with PCOS you are more likely to either under produce or over produce.

  • I don't have PCOS, but I do have a thyroid disorder... which can also lead to low supply problems.  I've been taking motherlove more milk special blend with some success.

Looking through the amazon reviews and there are women with PCOS who have had luck with it.

Another thing that seems to be helping is drinking barley water.  Everynight I simmer 1 cup of barley in 3 quarts of water with a couple tablespoons of fennel for about 2 hours.  Strain off the barley and fennel and add some sweetener.  I drink it all the next day.

I still have to supplement with formula, but I'm getting to the point where if i nurse and give him what I pump during the day, he only needs 4-6 oz of formula a day, not the 10 he was getting a couple weeks ago :)

     Good Luck.

  • I have PCOS and just started back to work and i've noticed I can't pump as much as she's eating.  When I BF (in the morning and at night) she seems satisified, but i'm about 3 ounces short when I pump at work.

I've tried lactation cookies, oatmeal and tons of water without much success...i'll have to look into the motherlove more milk as PP mentioned.

  • I'm just lurking in here trying to get ideas for next month.... I also have PCOS and with DD1 I could pump forever and not even fill the bottom of the bottle. She would also scream her head off if she was put near my breast. I don't want to discourage you, but I had to formula feed. I'm hoping things go better this time around. Good luck!
