Anybody switch OBs in the middle of a pregnancy?

Did it make insurance a PITA? Any other headaches to anticipate?

I don't "hate" or even "seriously dislike" my current ob...they seem okay (don't love them either, they're 'fine'). I've only known them since January (moved recently). They were my random first contacted ob in this town. 

But I've been interviewing pedi's and keep hearing horror stories about the hospital my ob delivers at (that the nurses are terrible, you get no lactation support, they don't prescribe the right treatments for children, etc). And I've heard good things from several people about the next-closest hospital (about 30min further away), which the other major OB practice in town delivers at. That practice also has midwives, which (to me at least) would be a nice bonus.

I made an appointment with the potential new practice for a routine check-up on Friday to meet them and see if I'd like to switch. But this far along, am I asking for a more of a headache than benefit?

    H and I are moving in a few weeks so I'll be switching OBs soon. It makes me nervous to think about trying to find a new doctor or midwife. Good luck

    Hmmm, I don't even really know why I'm responding because I can't help that much. I have a good friend that is 19 weeks along and changing OB's, but that's because her OB is also pregnant and won't be able to be there to deliver her. I believe she's just going to a different doc in the same practice though. :( sorry I couldn't help more!

    I am seriously considering it.  I am aiming for a VBAC and some of the doctors in my current practice are pro-VBAC and others aren't and I'm not eager to roll the dice and see who I get that day.  So I'm doing some research to try to find another practice in the area.

    With DD, I switched at 24 weeks.  I just wasn't happy with my first ob, and I wanted the best, so I switched.  Insurance was a breeze, and I just made sure I got a copy of my full chart to take to my new OB's office.  Best thing I ever did.  The only drawback was that my insurance makes me pay for the first office visit only (everything else is covered 100%), and I technically had 2 "first" office visits, so having DD cost me $30 instead of $15.  I think I'll get over the extra 15 bucks!  If you're not happy for any reason (including the hospital you'll be at) its worth it to look around.

    If you aren't happy, switch.  This is important.  You need someone and somewhere you are completely comfortable with.

    Well I didn't switch OBs but I did switch to from a midwife to an OB. My first visit with the OB was Monday. I began getting nervous about choosing a midwife since I had complications with DD. If you feel uncomfortable, then I would say go ahead and switch. You have to do what is best for you. For me, it wasn't no big deal to switch. I had to fill out new patient information which was only about 2-3 pages. Mainly asking about my pregnancy history, medical history and insurance info.  And as far as the blood work, your new OB can ask your old OB for all your information. My new OB gave me the choose to go ahead and do blood work though their facility or get the info faxed over to them.

    Yes, not with this pregnancy though. When I found out I was having twins at 22ish weeks, at my next appt. the OB didn't even mention the fact that I was now carrying multiples. When I told him, he proceeded to tell me "Our goal will be to get you to 34 weeks." My mom, a NICU nurse, marched me right out of there and found me a new OB.

    I made it to 38, thank you very much!

    I just had to switch for insurance reasons. I was so bummed out at first, but i met the midwife and all of the staff seem super nice, so Im thinking it will be ok.  Still it's hard...just another added stress that we don't need!

    I'd say that it would be better to find a place where you're comfortable. It's a big deal to go through labor and not be sure of your doctor. But after hearing about that other hospital would make up my mind to change in a heartbeat! GL, I hope your interview appt goes great!

    ETA: I see you're in NoVA, I am as well. Which hospital were the nurses talking about (although I'm sure I know)? I delivered DD at Reston and plan to go there again with this one. I can share my experience from there with you if that will help. My doctor delivers there and at Fairfax. And just so you know, in NoVA, Fairfax is the place you'll be air lifted to should there be any extra, immediate needs for the baby.

    I am considering switching.  We are moving July 1st and our current OB will be about 30 min. away.  There is one that is only 10 min away from where we live, but it would require switching hospitals as well.  I don't think it will be too much of a problem...but we will see!
