gift for our doula?

our doula is just starting out (we were her first birth) so she didn't charge us. she needs to attend a few in order to get certified. so understandably it was a win-win. she needs to build business/gain experience and we got to have a doula Smile but we want to pay her something or give her a nice gift or something.... 

DH wants to send her a check for $100-$150. a check seems so impersonal after such a personal experience Smile but at the same time, if i were in her shoes i'd certainly appreciate a check! so what do we do? spend more/less? she actually lives in Houston so she drove her twice (so gas money was spent), then was here for maybe 12 hours+ for the birth.  

any gift ideas? i was thinking about ordering her some hand stamped jewelry or something rather than a check but I don't know... if its not her taste then it goes to waste!

    I would do the check. I think she would really appreciate that. It is always nice to have extra money! Then, she can spend it how she wishes.

    A check would be nice but there's always the possibility that she won't cash it.  You could also do a gift card or a gift certificate to some kind of spa.  I like the idea of handmade jewelry but that stuff's kind of tough if you don't know her style.  That's really nice of you to do.

    I would do a gift card to somewhere practical like Walmart, Amazon, or Target.

    Jewelry is difficult to buy for someone unless you really know their taste.
