Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Hernia after C-Section

I've been putting it off, but I went to the OBGYN yesterday for  discomfort & some pain near my c-section line. I thought it was caused by the scar tissue.  Apparently, I have a hernia. The doctor said that if I plan to have another baby, to take advil for it &  that she would fix it after my next c-section. If it gets worse, I have to go back in.

Has anyone had this? I googled it & I think its an incisional hernia commonly caused by c-sections.

Re: Hernia after C-Section

  • yes, yes, yes.  It was awful!!!!   I also thought it was just pain from the c-section so I didn't do anything about it until I starting throwing up after working out (a common symptom).  I called my OB and she said to go to a regular doctor because it sounded like a hernia.  When I went, he put one hand on my stomach and said, "when do you want to schedule the surgery?"

The incisional surgery (also called a ventral hernia) will not go away by itself.  It will only get worse in time as the abdominal wall rips more. Your intestines are pushing through the wall which is when the pain is worse.  You could probably feel a bump- that's the intestine (sorry to be graphic).  Lying down will make it feel better- gravity pull the intestines back into the abdominal sac.

I had surgery in May.  I had laproscopic surgery so it wasn't a large scar- just a few small cuts.  Because of that, it was a day surgery where I went in the morning to the hospital and was released in the evening.  I highly highly recommend finding a doctor who will do it that way.  The recovery time is so much faster.  It was like the c-section all over again (pain wise).  Percocet and all.   You're not supposed to lift your dc for a while and that was the hardest part (I lasted 3 days and then started lifting- not the smartest move but it turned out ok).

I'm glad I had the surgery because I'm 100% better now.  Mine turned out to be large so I couldn't have waited until child number 2.  I guess it depends how often and how bad your pain is.

Good luck- if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me directly.  jhoexter24@aol.com.  My doctor said it's fairly common after a c-section but I didn't find any other moms on the nest who had it happen (I posted about it back in April/May).

  • Thanks so much for the information. I had a very large fybroid tumor removed a year before I got pregnant (it was like a c-section but without the baby). Then the c-section in April. Because of these surgeries, my doctor wants to wait until I have another child to fix the problem. So we'll see.

I'm glad all went well for you & that you're okay now.

  • I too have a hernia that my primary says is from the hernia but mine is in my belly button and he thinks will get better with exercise.  It does not hurt anymore but I think it sticks out more often now.  I go back to my OBGYN in a few months so if it is not better by then I will have him check it.  Man I do not want another surgery.  Hopefully I will be able to wait until my next dc.   I also have a friend that had one and had surgery to repair it.  She had a lot of problems with her's but is much better since the surgery.

I know this is not help but atleast you know you are not alone.
