My husband is convinced that we should never ever put the rice cereal in her bottle, but I know a ton of people who do. I'm seeing the pedi tomorrow and plan on asking him then. But...
My son is a DISASTER with a spoon, so we put it in the bottle. We just use a fast-flow nipple (level 2 in NUK) and heat the bottle a bit.
Our pedi said it was a matter of personal preference - I prefer not to have rice cereal splattered on every surface of my home.

P/SAIF always welcome, especially if you share your sticky baby dust!

Our pediatrician's office recommends spoon fed. So that's what we tried. LO does not enjoy it yet though. I'm going to try one more week and if he still gags I might ask if we should switch from rice to oatmeal.
A lot of babies aren't ready to eat any cereal yet at just over 4 months so I would just give LO some time to keep taking only formula and try the rice cereal again in a few weeks.
We saw the pedi yesterday. My pedi does not want me to put it in a bottle at all. She wants her to practice with the spoon. So far I think she has gotten more cereal on her face and bib than in her mouth, but we are having fun and Lilly loves it
We are doing a cross between traditional and BLW. We use the spoon and hold it in front of DD. Sometimes she grabs it and waves it around (making a mess) and sometimes she grabs our hand like she is steadying it and lunges for it or pulls it to her. Either way, kids are messy and she enjoy's it/is learning to use a spoon.
When you introduce cereal to LO the main purpose of it is to give them ?practice? eating and help develop their ability to eat and swallow the solids. From my understanding the cereal is not for nutrition purposes as LO should receive all needed nutrition from their Brest milk or formula. With that being said I do not see the point of putting it in a bottle, you are not really helping LO learn to eat. (If you do it for reflux that is completely different and has a purpose).
If your LO rejects the spoon and makes that big of a mess then they might not be ready for solids yet.

I've read something similar to this too...maybe on www.wholesomebabyfood.com? or it might have been my baby book...anyway, I've read in several places that putting it in the bottle defeats your purpose of teaching LO to eat solid foods - using utensils, fingers, etc.
I put some breast milk onto the spoon for about a week or so before rice cereal was introduced (not exclusively, we did this a for few minutes/2 times a day). My thinking was that LO could get used to the spoon, but the breast milk was 'familar'. Then when LO seemed okay with that, we upgraded and introduced a small amount of brown rice cereal. As a side note: We also went through a variety of styled spoons until LO found one 'suitable' LOL. Try experimenting a little....:-)

This is what my pedi says also. Your trying to teach them a new skill.
