Food Allergy

food allergy causes diaper rash?

Anyone have this experience? Know if there are certain foods that are more likely to trigger a rash than others?

I have put DS on a restricted diet because of his extreme diaper rash (dairy free, sugar free, gluten free).  The rash is clearing up and when it does, I was going to start introducing the restricted foods again and would obviously like to start with the least likely culprits first.  I was thinking that I'd re-introduce fruits first (except citrus), then maybe wheat, then maybe the dairy?  Dairy seems the most likely culprit to me since I am lactose intolerant, but of course who really  knows.

Any advice is welcome, I've never had to deal with allergy/intolerance issues before.

  • OJ or juice of any kind bothers Jacobs bum pretty bad. Strawberries are a little iffy, but I still avoid.

  • Asher tried pasta and wheat bagels this week, and now has a diaper rash, along with his other symptoms. Doing an elimination diet like you described sounds like a good way to find out what is bothering his little bottom! Hope it gets better quick!

  • Yes.  When dd was exposed to her allergens, she would get an awful diaper rash.

  • Ds worst symptom was his awful diaper rash. It was a bleeding open wound looking rash right around his anus. It was never really where the diaper actually touched his skin. That's pretty much how I knew it was due to something he ate. Dairy was most common so I cut that out and sure enough it disappeared.

  • This may be something too obvious, but have you tossed out baby wipes?  My daughter who has several food allergies had a continual diaper rash (despite a strict and careful allergy free diet) from probably 3 months until 2 years that would come and go and finally went away for good when I completely eliminated baby wipes (and I was using the sensitive kind and was only using them for extra cleansing with #2 diapers).  I use Viva paper towel moistened with water and a blow dryer on the cool setting to dry her bum.  Finally she has no diaper rash (just in time to start potty training!).  I also tried every kind of diaper imaginable and nature's baby care (at Babies R Us) works best for her.  Just a quick thought for you.
