Trouble TTC

Metformin ??

I recently started a low-carb diet (because I have PCOS) and was losing a good amount of weight pretty quickly.  Once I started taking Metformin I stopped losing weight and have actually gained a little, without changing my eating habits.  Anyone taking Metformin have problems with gaining weight?  I was told it would hopefully help me lose a few pounds, but no such luck so far.  However, I've only been on it a week.  Any advice?

Re: Metformin ??

  • I have PCOS and am on Metformin now.  I too have not changed a thing in my diet and have gained weight.  I also get really bloated really easily.  My doctor said it was a combination of all of the drugs I'm on that are making me gain weight though....even though I didn't start gaining until I started the Metformin.  Are you taking anything else?

  • I'm sure this is no help, but I've been on Metformin for 8 years now, and it does not make me lose weight. I wish it did, but it sure doesn't. :(

Nope, I'm not taking anything else right now and I'm actually working-out more, so I know I should be losing it. It's very frustrating. I've been reading a lot online and about 70% of what I read from people say they've lost weight with it. So I guess I'm confused.  The Dr. told me I needed to lose a little, so it's like a catch-22; if I take the pill I gain, if I don't take the pill my BW is out of control.  I may call the Dr. and see what she says.  I'm suppose to see my Endo at the end of the month also.  Like I said, frustrating.

  • Metformin hasn't made me loose any weight either. But I believe it has helped me maintain my weight instead of gaining it. I'm also on a Thyroid medication (levothyroxine) that is supposed to help me loose weight but I am maintaining. Even with increasing my exercise and decreasing my calories, I have lost maybe a pound or two, not much. But I haven't gained any... no complaints here!

    Hope that helps!

I have been on Metformin for about a month now, and I have also gained about 1.5 pounds so far. I was really hoping it would help me loose.  I haven't changed my diet and I don't excersize on a regular basis.

  • I am not on Metformin yet but will be very soon. When the dr explained it to me. I asked about weight loss and she said that you can lose but it takes a few weeks to get into your system to see results. From a different perspective... My father was a professional body builder so unfortunately I was taught all of this and what I learned was 1. muscle weighs more than fat. 2. It takes about 3-4 weeks of continuous working out to where you start seeing a difference in your weight from working out bc your body has to get used to it. It may take less time but I just try to count on a month before you see a difference. 3. If you were already working out and you upped your amount your body can retain more water bc it wants to protect itself. Good Luck though!
