Two Under 2

More about cars (Sequoia)...

I know I posted about cars a few days ago and several others have to. I'm still trying to bipass the minivan option. We looked at the Toyota Sienna and HATED it! The Honda Odessey was a better option of the two.

We looked at a Toyota Sequoia today and really liked it. My issue I am having is the number of LATCH systems available in most of these SUVs. The Sequoia has LATCH in the 2 captain seats of the 2nd row and then a teether anchor behind the middle seat of the 3rd row.

I'm clueless on the teether anchor b/c I've never used it. Also, once my oldest is ready for a booster seat do they even use the LATCH system? I'm wondering if I am ruling out car options unnecessarily due to the LATCH.

Opinions?

  • You can always use seatbelts instead of LATCH.

    this.

also, if you need easy access to the 3rd row, the buick enclave has capt. Chairs that can be moved forward or back to allow for more space for the 1st or 3rd row. Just an fyi (we are on the suv hun also...soooo tired of it!)

  • i think your making yourself nuts with the latch thing. Talk to a car seat safety person. When I got our seats checked, the woman said latch and seat belts are equally safe, LATCH is just faster to get in.

thanks! i think i am over thinking it as well. I'm pretty sure once #1 gets to a booster those don't even LATCH in. And she "should" be in a booster before we have #4. Each car sales man we have talked to say "they aren't sure" as far as safety of seatbelt vs LATCH. I know when we were all young we were seatbelted in.

  • My niece is in a britax frontier at 7...she is only 42 lbs and its a 5 pt harness, but eventually it goes to a reg seat belted booster.

Look at the laws in your area, some have a specific limit of weight to when you can switch to a booster, some say age and weight. I plan on keep mine all in 5 pt harnesses as long as possible, but you can just belt those seats in without latch. Our old accord had latch on only two sides of the car, and so since the middle was safest, we belted him in and it was very safe. I say, as long as you can fit the car seats RFing (as long as you would like them to be) then the car will be good.

::::give in to the minivan::::: haha

  • Yes, LATCH is just as safe as seatbelts; LATCH is just easier.  This is what I was told by a Safekids.org member who taught me everything I needed to know about carseat safety at the fire department.  Good luck in your car hunt; I understand how tiring it can be.  We finally decided on the Traverse (with second row captain's seats) and I LOVE it.  Got it last week. :)

Ditto that!  We used to have the Sequoia.  DD's seat was in using LATCH, and we had DS's seat belted.  They felt equally secure.

They're likely just saying that to cover their asses.  My family is in the car business and I known the sales consultants wouldn't be comfortable assuring a car buyer one was safer than the other - not really their area of expertise, kwim?
