Another Kaiser Question - Hospital Tour

So we changed over to Kaiser after having Aaron.  I feel kinda like a first time mom here as I have noooo idea where L&D is, what their check in process is, what paperwork I should do before, etc.  I wasn't planning on taking a birthing class again, and I know with KP that the hospital tour and L&D policies are part of their classes.

I REALLY don't want to have to pay $ to find out this info, so is there some other way I can find out this information (do the hospital tour or whatever I need to do)?  TIA.

Re: Another Kaiser Question - Hospital Tour

  • What Kaiser are you thinking of giving birth at?  I go to Santa Clara Kaiser for everything and I really love their facility. Everything is all in one place (dr's offices and the hospital is next door).

As for check in process, etc, SJBride and ZoeMay gave birth there so they may be able to help you out for that.

  • I just went through this :)

You just need to talk to the health education center at the facility/area you want to deliver at, and they can sign you up for a tour without the class.

  • We're taking two hospital tours, and only one of them is the "Late Pregnancy & Hospital Tour" class...the other is just "Hospital Tour"...neither of them cost anything, and I don't think the "Late Pregnancy & Hospital Tour" class goes into much about actual labor and birth...I imagine it'll just be more like policies and what to expect and when to come in and when you'll be admitted, etc.  I don't know for sure, but I do know that I'm scheduled for it at 6:30pm on a Tuesday night, wheras their actual childbirth classes that cost money and teach pain management techniques, contraction timing, etc. are either 6 weeks long or full-day(s) Saturdays.

Either way, you should be able to get either of those tour options for free and just by inquiring with their health education center (look up the classes and numbers to call online...you leave a message and they'll call you back).

  • Thanks ladies!  Sounds like I need to call the Health Education Center.  I am going to be delivering at Santa Clara, so I'll schedule something for this summer.

  • We switched to Kaiser just after I got pregnant this time.

I did a family (bring your other LOs) hospital tour that was free - I scheduled it with my OB's nurse.  We are delivering in Roseville, so it may vary a bit, but Kaiser should have a similar program in the South Bay.

I also felt like a first time Mom - being unfamiliar with Kaiser, they have a different prenatal plan as far as check ups and seeing an OB regularly (I've only seen mine 3 times in 9 months.)

We took a hospital tour and the late pregnancy class.

After taking the tour, we really didn't need the tour part of the late pregnancy class, but it was still nice to hear the information again. The late pregnancy class (at least the one up here in Santa Rosa) was mostly about labor and delivery, not late pregnancy. They covered signs of labor and when to come in, but they also went over what to expect in the delivery room. They brought out some of the tubes and other equipment they use. It was really informative as to what to expect when delivering at a Kaiser.

They'll help you out. There is a hospital tour that's not associated with any of the classes. And I know that, at least in Sac, you can also sign up for a private family tour if you want. You can bring A along with you to that (although he'd probably be bored). I CANNOT wait to meet Miss Pookie Pie! ;)

  • My Kaiser offered a free online L&D class where they had a video tour of the hospital.  Maybe ask your OB if they offer that.  I opted to take that class 2nd time around for refresher.
  • From what I remember KP Santa Clara doesn't give in-person hospital tours because it's a private facility...?  There's an online virtual tour and the Late Pregnancy class goes over what to do, where to go when you go into labor.

I highly advise (as well as KP) filling out all the paperwork and paying your co-pay before getting admitted.  I believe you get the admission forms from your OB or L&D - I don't totally remember now.

I think this is right about no tour for Santa Clara, but there is an online tour.

When I had to go to L&D I did all the preenrollment paperwork then, but I think you can make an appointment to do it early before you deliver - but definitely get it done before you go to deliver.

You can always come visit me after I deliver to scope it out :)

  • One more thing... it you go to L&D to pick-up the admission forms - Ring the bell to get buzzed in.  Always ring the bell, otherwise you set off the alarm.

And when you go into labor, tell everyone visiting you to ring the bell. :)

    Ring the Bell!

That's weird they don't have the door locked unless you ring the bell.  You'd think they would have fixed that after so many people setting off the alarm.  haha.
