Florida Momma's Come in please!

Jake and I are flying to Florida this morning to visit my Dad for a week.  In the past, he's always warned me about fire ants and to avoid stepping in their dirt piles.  Is this true?  If so, how do you let your toddlers run around on the grass? Is that just not an option?

  • Umm I guess it's unavoidable but we don't really do anything to stop it. I still go outside to walk the dogs ect..and have never been stung.. Not sure how you would avoid it?! Where in fla are you going..

  • Yes, we have fire ants.  I just let C run in the grass; I don't really do anything to avoid it.  I haven't seen any in our yard.  It's common, but it's not like they are everywhere.  It's been YEARS since I was bit.

  • My dad lives in Vero Beach...I remember seeing some on the sides of his driveway, but nothing really in the yard.  He makes such a big deal out of it- lol! Thanks for the input girls :)

I don't live in FL but I grew up there. Fire ants are definitely a hazard and they move quickly, so you just have to watch kids when they're outdoors. It is definitely easy for them to sit in a bed or step in it without realizing it and those ants are FAST. But it certainly never kept us from playing outside.

They are more of a problem in certain areas, so where your dad lives it may be a bigger issue than some other parts of FL. And if he's heard stories locally of kids being swarmed he's probably just being cautious.

This. We have fire ants here in TX and DD just got bit maybe 10-20 times on her foot when she was outside with my dad a few weeks ago. Just make sure to keep an eye on where he's walking. I react really badly to them (my whole foot swells up) and I had a bite maybe a month or two ago and one at the end of last year. Fire ant bites are no fun, but even if he does get bit he'll be okay.
