VBAC

C/S Q - Swelling

I had my 2nd c/s on the 25th of May. Everything went great, minus not getting my VBAC. The first day I was released I immediately started swelling up, legs/thighs and feet. I elevated (feet above my heart) and rested a lot the first week, and part of the 2nd week. Swelling is still EXCESSIVE. My feet kill me if I sit more than 20 minutes or even stand. The fluid just fills up in my feet, legs and thighs and sometimes numbness in all those areas. I was so swollen my normally extra baggy maternity jeans were tight and barely fit. I was grateful I bought some baggy workout pants from Target, lol. They stretched, lol

I managed to call the nurse to find out if this is normal (since I didn't experience it with DD). I know all c/s are not created equal. They said yes and it would take up to 2 weeks to go away. Tomorrow is exactly two weeks, still extremely swollen. I can press onto the top of my feet and its like silly putty, gross that it just stays and painful. I've eaten watermellon to help. I have a call into my MD so waiting for a call back. They usually take forever to call back. Luckily no other side effects, just annoying that I am so swollen.

I was wondering if anyone experienced extreme swelling and if so, how long did it take to go away? Were you able to take a diuretic that didn't affect your breast feeding? Thanks!

  • Did you mention the numbness to the nurse? I have not heard of that being normal, but I don't know. I hope you get a call back soon and can find some relief. Sounds awful. :( Congrats on your baby!

  • I had extreme swelling after Jacob was born, but it didn't last as long as yours...the worst was over by about day 10 and was pretty much gone by the week after that.  A little caffiene always works for a mild diuretic for me....maybe try an extra cup of coffee?

  • I also had some pretty extreme swelling, but mine was immediate and I would say it was gone within two weeks. It had also gotten gradually better after the first 3-4 days.

  • Yes i went through the exact same thing. painful swelling everywhere my feet looked extra thick like if i poked them they would pop. my legs were tight and hurting it was hard to walk. i had swelling with my first in my ankles and feet but nothing like this. my swelling just really went down a few days ago. my dd was born may 16th. i thought there was something wrong it was so bad and i was told to go to ERfor the swelling and pain. my midwife said pain in the calfs can be a possible blood clot i went in to be checked had an u/s done on my legs they were fine. i was told i had edema and it would go away in 2 weeks. well it took it a little longer and it was a terrible few weeks. i had terrible night sweats to the point where my clothes and bed was soaked! This was my bodies way of getting rid of the extra water retension. i was given alot of fluids during my hospital stay on top of having to drink alot to stay hydrated. i was told there would be swelling. i couldnt even get my wedding rings back on until now. i had to take them off before surgery because they said my fingers were so swollen they would swell more from the fluids and i would be compromising my finger so they would cut the rings off! well with alot of gel i got them off. mines was that bad. i would give it some time or you can always go in and be checked if you feel its more serious. i was told i had to go to the ER for that and i had another problem anyway with my incision. i would stay away from the watermelon since it has alot of water and its just making you retain more water. obviously you have to stay hydrated since your nursing but i wouldnt contribute any extra foods like watermelon to your diet to add on to the fluid retention. i didnt take anything since im nursing i just let my body naturally let it sweat it out.
  • I didn't have this.. I wish I could help. I hope you get better soon.

  • With my son I had a c-section and I was swollen for a little over three weeks! It was so horrible I actually couldn't bend my feet to stand properly, I thought for sure something was horribly wrong because how could someone swell so much?! My MIL is a OB nurse however and she assured me that it is normal for some people, especially if you've gone over your due date (like I did.) She did say if it goes past 4 weeks then calling the Dr. would be advisable. However if you are having headaches or severe pain near your incision I was told that accompanied by swelling is something you need to call your Dr. with right away! Hope this helps and hope your swelling goes down soon!
