I'm debating on whether I really need to take any of the pre-birth classes my hospital is offering. My Dr hasnt said I HAVE to but she said "they have some good classes, just choose which you want to participate in".
For those that didn't take any, do you feel you missed out or should have?
Re: If you didnt take hospital classes, come in..
I didn't. However, I was having a c/section. Though DD did try to evacuate early, so I got to experience some labor too.
I did the Laugh and Learn Childbirth video. LOVED it. Answered all the important questions and DH and I could watch it in segments based around our schedule. Did a BF'ing video too. Didn't find it as helpful as a book I bought (not sure which one).
I worked retail when I was pregnant with DD so I thought it was easier to manage this way. Plus, I traveled a lot for work.
I finished the c/section portion the night before I had her (I was already having contractions, which I didn't really notice). HTH
I did. Wish I hadn't though cause it was a HUGE waste of time!
We used none of the methods that they teach you when I actually gave birth. But I had a GREAT OB and he was amazing coach during my whole birthing process.. My OB also told me it was sort of dated info..which it was..The whole thing was really a waste of time. Quite frankly, I learned way more pratical info from my prenatal yoga class!
I did take the bfing class and wish I had taken then baby care class. Cause we had NO idea how to take care, swaddle, bath, hold a baby...And we learned all of this in the NICU from the amazing nurses..that would have been way more helpful to us! So I would pick and choose what you want.
IUI#2 - 01/07/09 = BFP!!! Twins!! Pre-term labor 20 weeks
IUI#3 - 1/31/10 = BFP!!!! M/C - 8wks
IVF #1 - 7/2010 = c/p
FET - 9/2010 = another c/p
IUI#4 - 2/14/11 = BFP!
I think it depends on how much you already know. I signed up for birthing, infant CPR and breastfeeding classes but didnt get to attend them because I ended up on bedrest and I did fine without them.
I consider myself pretty knowledgable in the whole birthing process already so I dont think I missed much. If nothing else, I would want to at least take a tour of the maternity ward so I would know what to expect and that tour is usually included in the childbirth classes.
I was disappointed that I missed the BFing class so I made sure to do plenty of reading on my own and talk to the LC while I was in the hospital to make sure that I was doing it right. BFing really just came naturally to me and in the end I ended up just listening to my babies cues rather than following anyones rules.
I still tell myself that I am going to take an infant CPR class but just havent gotten around to it. I really wish I could have made that class. If it is offered, definitely take it!
I say it cant hurt to take the classes so whatever you're interested in you should do.
