I've made no secret of the fact that I had a small glass of red wine with some regularity in my pregnancy with Cal (midwife approved, and not in the 1st tri). I realize I'm in the minority.
I just googled "alcohol & pregnancy" for the first time since I was pregnant with Cal, and found this intriguing article. Previously, no studies had been done on light/moderate drinking & pregnancy...
Thought some of you might be interested.
Light Drinking Said OK for Pregnant Women
Re: Article on alcohol & pregnancy
Good stuff.
Now I want a drink and I am not pg!
Great link.
My mom is friends with my OB, so I saw her socially a few times during my twin pregnancy. One time, she said, "I am telling you this NOT as your doctor, but just a casual person at a party...but I read a study saying that a glass of alcohol can help relax the uterus of a woman carrying multiples in her third trimester. Might want to try that for your contractions."
Of course, I had GD so I was nervous of what alcohol would do for my blood sugar, but I would have happily had one if it hadn't been for that.
I had a ton of BH's during my 3rd tri with Ava. I had about 2 oz of red wine when they got nuts, and it helps. (or shared a beer with Davez)
By the time it goes thru my gut, my liver, my blood, my kidneys and thru to the kid... well, I was ok with a very small amount 3rd tri on.
i.e. Europeans don't have NEARLY the paranoia (?? right word, to each their own) that the states do on this. And their FAS rates are actually far LESS than here.
When I went through PTL I was reading on the web (after the fact, of course!) to guzzle a glass of water but one glass of wine would be better as it calms the uterus.
If I get pg again and I start PTL again that is my immediate plan of action...for both my uterus and my nerves!! LOL
Yes, it does relax uterine muscles. In fact, when my mom was pregnant with my brother (1972) and me (1974), she was prescribed alcohol by her doctor. She didn't have a hard time conceiving...she had a hard time staying pregnant (10 pregnancies, 4 living children, 2 that passed away within hours due to preterm labor and various miscarriages).
With my brother, she was on bedrest and liquor from her 6 month on...for me it was from the day she found out until she delivered. She drink vodka and fresca with me...8 shots a day, all spread out and timed and measured.
My dad says it was the hardest time in their marriage because they couldn't afford to both drink.
As for me, imagine the panic attack I had in 7th grade health when I first heard about FAS.
In the end, all is good and vodka is my drink of choice.
I have friends IRL who drank while pregnant...but I do think there's a stigma about it, so most people who do, don't want to admit to it (probably especially on here).
