Natural Birth

Weight Gain

I'm new here - I switched from Baby Center to here today. I plan on having a NUCB after I had a horrible epidural adventure nine years ago with my son.

I have really only gained two pounds since finding out about the baby in April. My OB asked me last appointment if I've been eating or been sick. Yes I've been eating - and I haven't been sick at all - thank goodness. Is this normal? Should I be worried? I used to run at least three times a week but haven't in a while and I am starting a walking program at work to get myself back into it. Thanks for any help/advice!

Re: Weight Gain

  • I actually lost two pounds within the first 15 weeks...I have continually put on weight since then (I am at about 20 pounds gained total). However my MW practice doesn't even check my weight- as long as baby and I are healthy...that is all that really matters.

  • Welcome and congratulations =)

If you're eating well and feeling fine, don't worry about it.

I didn't really start gaining until past 14ish weeks either, and ended with a totally normal 26 lb gain.

  • Don't worry about it. As long as you're not starving yourself - you're fine. I've only gained 12 pounds and the doctor was thrilled about it. She said most people don't listen to their bodies. Eat when you're hungry, don't eat when you're not. And don't worry about the weight gain - or lack of. :)

that makes so much sense!  i can't tell you how many times i wanted to not go to a prenatal app. b/c i didn't want to see how much i gained!  lol  stupid america for putting so much pressure on women to look like stick figures!  (trying to type one handed with DS in arms, sorry for sloppinmess!)

  • That's fine, you will gain more as time goes on.
  • Thanks! I've been worried. I was pretty young with my first (18) and I gained about 60 pounds cause everyone said "Eat for two!" but lost it all in 3 months. I really didn't want to do that with this baby and I do eat when I'm hungry. I just seem to not be able to eat as much as I normally do and I get fuller faster it seems. Again - thank you!

  • I've been concerned about too much weight gain recently.  When I asked my doctor, she was focused on the weight gain after 13 weeks.  You're just barely past that point, so I wouldn't really worry about it for now.  Just eat healthy when you feel hungry.

At 14 weeks, I'd only gained two pounds. Like you, I was eating and not too sick. My midwife always said it was fine. It's best not to put on too much weight in the first trimester anyway. Now, at almost 21 weeks, my total weight gain is up to 7 pounds.

  • what is the difference between natural and unmedicated?

  • Most women get pitocin when induced, an epi or something for pain - any of this means you are NOT having an unmedicated birth. Natural unmedicated means spontaneous birth with NO drugs what so ever - period. I don't want my child to be subject to the crap they give you.
