Natural Birth

Met my midwife! *long, journal-ish*

I got a glowing recommendation from my brother and his wife for this CNM, they had a great med free birth in a small local hospital with her and couldn't say enough great things about her. SIL says she feels like she is like a mom to her now.

So needless to say after an average "well, we'll see how it goes, keep an open mind" response when I brought up natural birth to my regular Dr at my first maternity visit, I was eager to meet this midwife and have a more supportive, personal experience!

I felt like I had come home when I walked in! Her office is beautiful, a very spa like atmosphere with water trickling over rocks and plants around. Her exam rooms are roomy and comfortable with awesome pregnancy and birth books sitting around. The staff are super friendly, professional, but also down to earth and easy going. Thankfully the visit wasn't very medical because I'd already done all of my initial visit things with my primary, so it was nice to just sit and chat and get to know eachother.

She is so warm, calm and confident, and she also has a direct air about her and let me know that she can be firm when she needs to be, either with me or maybe with visitors (evidently she has been called the visitor nazi, lol). I like that because I feel like I will need a tough, protective type person there and I'm not sure DH will be able to fill that role in the moment! We had a nice long chat about many things and I really felt like she is very focused on me as a mother and making sure I am totally supported and taken care of and will be prepared to go with my instincts when it is time. She loved that I am already reading Birthing from Within and recommends that book highly because it is less about "learning" and head knowledge about birth than it is more learning about yourself, and fears that may hold you back and your specific coping skills.

I am just so encouraged because I feel like we will have a great relationship and actually feel supported by my provider rather than just be managed. Yay for midwives! And kudos if you made it through this! Smile

  • Yay for positive experiences! When we did our first consult at the birth center I fell in love, too, so I know exactly what you mean. Even my BF felt really good about it which was awesome because he was a little iffy on a birth center when we first started talking about it.

  • It makes SUCH a difference to have a provider that you trust, feel comfortable with, and is in line with your beliefs.

    Yey for you!
