Hi..this is my first time posting here..I'm hoping to get some answers or advice. My son is 2. From birth we realized he could not tolerate milk based formulas so he was on soy. He drank soy formula until he was a year old. We attempted whole milk, got the same reaction as milk based formula, went to soy milk and all was well. So he drinks soy milk and has been just fine with it. He loves it.
Here's my question. Or confusion I guess. He can eat all other dairy (except yogurt) without an issue at all. Cheese, egg, butter, ice cream etc..all are fine. It's just milk/yogurt. Anyone have any ideas why? Should I just stick with soy and be done or try 2% milk rather than whole milk. That's the only thing I've never tried.
Side note..the reaction we see to milk is vomiting within 15 minutes of drinking it. To date he has no other allergies at all.
TIA.
Re: Milk allergy moms..come in please...
I would consult a pediatric allergist. I would want to know which specific proteins in the milk that he is allergic to.
I agree with PP and would consult a pediatric allergist. It sounds like you've had him tested, right? If you consult an allergist, they might be able to tell you more about what you can and cannot give him. Perhaps even give him milk in a controlled environment? I'd probably keep him on the soy milk if he's happy with it until you find out more. We *just* found out our DD (almost 2.5 years old) has a mild milk allergy and the transition to soy milk has been really hard - she really doesn't like it. Best of luck!
egg is not considered dairy. so you can be allergic to dairy but still eat eggs.
like pp said, i would contact your allergist but it may be the same thing why some people can have eggs when it's in a baked good but not scrambled. Maybe because cheese/butter is processed differently. The ice cream part doesn't make sense to me though. if he's reacting to milk, i can't imagine why he wouldn't react to ice cream.
call the allergist. i'm actually curious about that.

My son can not eat dairy at all. He drinks Lactose free milk, has lactose free icecream, chesse, ect. The only thing that he can tolerate is very small amounts of butter. Eggs are not considered dairy, and my son can eat them with no problem what so ever.
Honestly I don't think changing the fat content of the milk will make any difference. It still has the fat in it, just half the amount. I would just stick with soy, or if you wanted you could try Lactose free things.
It probably isn't a lactose issue if he is able to eat other dairy products. My DD 1 has the same issue. She eats everything else, but regular milk (or 1%, 2%, skim) gives her a rash/ezcema on her face and other splotches.
I agree about seeing the allergist, but it probably just has to do with the whole milk proteins or something in the milk.
There was a new study out, my Pedi jsut told us about it today, that feeding kids with a milk allergy other processed milk products (like baked goods, yogurts, cheeses, etc) will help eventually wear down the allergy.
My Pedi also said that if DD is eating enough other dairy products throughout the week that we don't have to bother with milk at all. We are doing soy formula still but we're going to cut that down soon and just not bother with milk at all right now.
