What do you do when LO cries in the car?

Lately, K has been bad about riding in the car unless someone is in the backseat with her.  It doesn't seem to be the car seat because she is fine in it as long as she can see someone.

So my question is, what do you do if your little one is screaming in the backseat?  Do you pull over even if your on the interstate?  Typically the exits are 10 minutes or so apart where I live.

  • Turn the music up, open the windows and sing along. That or try to comfort him with soft coos.

  • Depends. D hated car riding up until recently. If I pulled over for every cry, we would have never made it anywhere. I made rule to pull over if they were serious, breath rattling cries. That was until we discovered that rolling down the windows helps calm him. Used to work all the time... Now it has less effect. But he is way less fussy now. GL!

  • so long as there isn't an actual crisis, we crank up the radio and just sing along, wiht small breaks to "talk" to LO and reassure him that we're there and we love him.  :)
  • Play the music on her mirror. If that fails I reach back and shake her toy bar(if I'm at a light or something) and that has been working since I got that thing a week ago

  • I drive a 2 door civic so it's small enough for my long arms to reach back there and hold his paci in, which helps him calm down, and he likes the music too. I've found out that he's usually crying b/c he's so hot so I turn up the ac to full blast the whole way even if I'm freezing

  • It depends. DD has a specific "I'm hungry" crank and if I'm not 10 min or so from home (or where ever), I'll pull off somewhere safe and feed her. If it's just fussy, I'll turn on the Relax and Sleep app on my android, select white noise and put my phone on top of the carseat canopy. It works about 90% of the time.

This. Or I'll talk to him and say "It's okay, we're almost there" etc - Not that he knows what I'm saying, but just that he can hear my voice. There's nothing else to do. He's safe. If I pulled over every time he cried, we'd never get anywhere! He's a lot better now.

  • I try and talk to him or turn the radio up. If it's just me there isn't much I can do although my 4yo tries to comfort him as well. Most of the time it doesn't work because he can't see me.

I just try to stay calm and get where we're going. C is so bad in the car that if I stopped anytime she cried, we'd nevergo anywhere
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
