kicking/hitting during diaper changes

My son has started this behavior recently.  Every single diaper change results in getting kicked or slapped.  I firmly tell him, "no hitting" or "no kicking" or "be gentle".  None of it works and he thinks it's hilarious.  I've tried to do a short time out, but by the time I get his tush cleaned and clean diaper on, it's lost.  Plus, he doesn't seem quite ready for a true time-out.  Doesn't quite get it yet.

Any tips/hints on how to deal with this behavior.  It's incredibly tiring and frustrating!

Oh and in case my ticker doesn't work anymore or is gone, he'll be 2 in August.

Thanks!

Re: kicking/hitting during diaper changes

  • This is one of my biggest frustrations of the day.  We have been going through this kicking/rolling/flailing routine for months now.

Occasionally, he'll be distracted enough by a new toy, something that he's not supposed to have (like the Desitin, wipes, etc), or by me singing.

This works only some of the time.  Other times, I am literally wrestling him on the ground or on the changing table.  I do put him in a time out right after his diaper change, but sometimes that just so I can walk away and gain my composure!

  • We have been dealing with recently as well.  I usually try distraction, which works about 25% of the time.  If she's really freaking out, I'll just hold her legs down so she can't kick me and look her directly in the eye and say "we do not kick others."  Sometimes she'll calm herself down while I'm holding her legs but other times she starts kicking me as soon as I let them go.  So...I don't know what to do.  I just try to get her diaper off and on as soon as possible!

  • I'm dealing with this with my 11-month-old.  I've been trying to go in prepared with something for her to hold, but she sometimes just drops it on the floor and continues to protest.  She's been hitting me in the face when she's tired too and I'm so over it.
