Food Allergy

Good tasting non-dairy "cheese"?

Hey all,

We just found out last week that our 2.5 year old DD has a mild milk allergy (she's also allergic to peanuts). The allergist advised us to take her off all dairy for the next 6 weeks to see what happens - she's had a number of colds and other infections over the past year and a half and we want to see if this will make a difference.

So, I bought some soy cheese but, honestly, it tastes pretty bad (it's supposed to taste like American cheese slices). Any ideas for non-dairy cheese that tastes pretty good? She loves grilled cheese sandwiches, string cheese, and pizza - I'd love to find something that works!

Thanks!

  • If you have a trader joes or whole foods in your area they also have non soy cheeses like rice based as well

  • Awesome - thanks for the tip. We have a Whole Foods right by our house, so I'll check them out (that's where I got the soy cheese, too). Thanks!
  • Daiya vegan cheese melts great and the taste is better than soy based cheeses IMO. They sell it at whole foods.

  • i really love Dayia cheese. I'm sure there are some good soy cheeses also but dayia is delish in my opinion (my DH thinks it tastes like feet though :)

Also, i believe that if you change from regular cheese, you have to acquire a taste for something different.  Especially adults.. it takes us a while to get use to something different.  Kids may be different. i think kids are more visual -if it looks the same, they will go for it.
  • Thanks again for the tips, all. She will definitely try it if it looks like her "orange cheese", as she calls it. I'll get a couple and hopefully she'll like the next one. This is all new territory for me, so I really appreciate the advice.
  • ditto the Dayia cheese.  we all avoid soy and love the dayia cheese.
  • We have tried both and honestly, the best way to serve it for my kids is hot.  I usually make them "cheese toast" and melt a slice on bread.  It is NOT good just out of the fridge IMO.  Good luck.  I can't imagine taking away foods.  My kids have never had them in the first place.

  • I will be honest. I tried the daiya cheese and I thought it was gross. It was easier for me to just not eat cheese. Sad, but true.
