Horrible diaper rash or yeast infection ??

So the fact that I have to type yeast infection for my little giant is just grossing me out, but anyhow...

Since March Matthew has had 2 ear infections and then we just got over a bout of strep, so of course all 3 times he's been put on antibiotics.  The last ear infection and strep were probably 3 weeks apart.  I knew that antibiotics could cause bad diaper rashes, but when we got back from vacation and picked him up from my inlaws, holy moly, it just looks awful!  DH said this morning he was grabbing himself and when I changed him this morning he did it for me.

I don't want him to be in pain, so would you recommend I just take him in to get it checked out to be safe?  We've been trying to keep it as dry as possible, Desitin, etc. but I just HATE the way it looks.  And normally Desitin wipes his rashes out in no time.

TIA!

Re: Horrible diaper rash or yeast infection ??

  • my pedi always recommends Lotramin.  I should have bought stock in that company cause it works like a charm.

  • Yes, I'd try Lotrimin/anti fungal cream and you'll know pretty quickly if it is yeast or not. if it is, the anti fungal will start working fast.

Mix the Lotrimin with hydrocortisone cream and the purple Desitin.  This is what our pedi told us to do for yeast infections and it clears it up quickly.
  • Lotrimin + A&D.  Magic for yeast.  If there is redness/irritation from diarrhea, use cherry maalox and then cover with A&D.  If its both or you're not sure, do both- alternate for each diaper change.  Should be better in 24-48 hrs.
