3rd Trimester

subsitute doctor told me...

Today was my 36 week check up and first internal and GBS swab test. My normal OB had an emergency so they put me with another doctor in the same practice.  I really wanted to get this appointment done and I was excited to see if I could be starting to dilate. So he swabbed me, felt my ute, then he asks...."when was your last U/S?'' I said 17 weeks at the anatomy scan.. he then tells me he wants to order me an ultrasound this week cause he thinks I'm small (meaning my bump) for a 36 weeker.. I was so relieved SOMEONE other than me thinks the same! I've been trying to tell my Doc that I feel small and I should be bigger and he's brushed it off as me being normal size...This sub doc even said he thinks that I should have put more weight on... I've only gained 15 lbs, really 13 lbs cause I lost 2 lbs since last appt two weeks ago. I am normally 136lbs and 5 foot 2 on a good day.

Now, I'm *Kinda* nervous that I'm going for an US on Friday, what could be the reason I'm so small? A small baby, maybe? Ok, well even if she's 5 lbs shouldn't I have gained more? I'm still in pre preg clothes, minus the zipper and button, same bras too!

I'm a tiny bit bothered that my doctor didn't bring this up or agree with me about this....would you be bothered too? would you be worried?

Re: subsitute doctor told me...

  • ^^^ forgot to say that when I told my normal doctor my concerns of seeming too small, he simply told me I was normal size and I'm fine.

  • Some women just don't gain a lot of weight, but it seems a little concerning that you lost weight. I think that the ultrasound is just to be on the safe side, plus you get a reasurance that LO is okay =)

I hope all is well, good luck on Friday!!

  • I think that everything will be just fine. Not all women gain a bunch of weight or even get the big baby bump that some other  ladies get. I stayed pretty tiny with my first baby and with this one I am a little bigger but still on the smaller side. Everyone is defferent.

Your doctor knows you better than this  sub doc does, which is likely why he/she is not as concerned. I would talk about it more to your doc at your next appointment. Good luck with you U/S Smile

  • It just seems weird to me, that's all. I'm sure everything is fine in there it just bothers me. I will see what my doc says at the next appt since he will see that I went for an ultrasound.

  • Oh please try not to worry! I am small, too. I have gained 12 lbs. and my bump is still pretty small, and low (I am 5'4 130 pp). I have an US every appointment and baby is measuring 5 oz ahead so go figure. Try not to worry! They just want to double check. Keep us posted. I go back Friday too, and can't wait to see LO :) Try not to worry and enjoy!

I wouldn't worry either.  I'm also small - only gained 13 pounds (normally 127 lb. 5"4).  I've had an ultrasound at almost every appt. because I have a history of preterm labor.  Everything has been fine and I pray that everything is fine for you as well :)

  • As previous poster had said, I think that every pregnancy and every person's bodies are just so different.  I only say that based on my own experience.  With my first DD I felt so big the entire pregnancy - once I started showing of course.  This pregnancy I have felt much smaller even though DD#2 is measuring a week or so ahead this entire time.  I also have not gained as much weight this time around.  Those close to me can't believe the difference in my two pregnancies and people that don't know me find it hard to believe that I am as far along as I am.  Funny too because both pregnancies have been girls.

GL with your ultrasound, hopefully it will give you peace of mind.  Perhaps your other doctor never seemed concerned because of the fact that he has been seeing you from the very beginning....able to watch your progress whereas this new doctor doesn't.

  • I have only gained 13 lbs. and my stomach is measuring a month behind and at the last u/s my little guy was measuring 4 days ahead. My doctor told me that sometimes the position of the baby can throw off their measurements.

  • I'm measuring 6 weeks behind by fundal hieght. My MW freaked a bit a while back about it and sent me in for a growth u/s and NST. There were no issues at all and LO is measuring in the 40th percentile. Hope this helps ease your concerns!
  • The size of the belly means squat in my eyes. My daughter was 5lbs 14oz and I had like no belly the whole pregnancy. I also watch that " I didn't know I was pregnant" show and none of those women gained noticeable weight. I stopped gaining weight as well this time, but LO is growing fine. Think of it this way...you won't have a lot to lose later :)

  • With DS1 I gained 65 pounds, it was a lot of water weight but I still had a 9 pound 22 inch long baby. I was compleatly expecting the same with this little boy. But I have only gained a total of 19 pounds, I had lost a pound my last apt. I to can still fit in normal clothes. Both me and my DH were getting really concerned. When I had a U/S they told me he was just perfect the 51% and he should be about 7 1/2 pounds when he's born. So I guess we have nothing to worry about, We just have a normal sized baby this time. Try not to worry to much!

  • How small?

I never measured more than 35cm (pretty much meaning 35w) even at my 40w appointment. I just had a small baby, 6lbs 13oz. And I had even gained 32lbs... despite still measuring small. All the measures are just averages, no two women or pregnancies are alike.

  • my ob doesn't even do fundal measurements because they can vary depending on the position of the baby.  I am glad that they are sending you for an u/s though.  Good luck on friday.

This. My dr. doesn't get worked about much of anything. If you feel fine you are fine in his world. Thing is I really do trust his judgement. He's delivered hundreds of babies and seen a lot so I tend to believe him. I saw a sub dr. last week and while I liked him, he was a lot younger/inexperienced and definitely more drama-king. He brought up stuff to "discuss" or be "concerned" about that would never cross my regular drs. mind. Some pregnant women like the ongoing discussion, others would rather not know. It's a personality thing. When I have a legit concern with my regular OB, like pp he knows me, can search through the past history and make a call based on that.

  • My girlfriend was small her entire pregnancy, even I thought she looked small and was expecting her to have a 6 lber at best. She gained a total of 18 pounds I thiknk. Her baby was 8lbs 10 ounces. I still for the life of me have no idea where the hell she put him lol! Don't worry mama, I'm sure everything is just fine!
  • I did not really start showing until my third trimester and I only gained about 20 pounds the whole pregnancy.   My LO was 6lbs. 11oz and 20 inches long.
