My DS is 14 months and we are expecting again. I have a Toyota Corolla right now and my DH has a Dodge Ram. My car was fine when it was just my DH and I but now it's too small especially when we take trips. His truck has enough seats but oddly my son's carseat fits better in my car in the rear position. His truck will work well once they're both in convertible carseats but I don't like driving his truck since I'm short and it's just to big for me. We know we are going to need a bigger car but I'm not sure if we should go with a car or van. We aren't sure how many kids we want and I know I want 2 for sure I'm just on the fence about 3. I guess we will know after #2. I think we can get by with a bigger car with 2 but I would like a van if we have 3 since I would want to have them close together. I am considering a toyota camary since my corrola has been so reliable and as a van I'm considering a VW Routan. I don't like SUVs that require the 2nd seat to go down to get to the 3rd row since the carseats will be there. That is my biggest reasong for wanting a van and if we have a car then we won't have that problem but we also won't have the extra space that a van has. Are there any cars/suvs/vans that you love with 2 kids that will also work if you have more? Thank you.
Re: Cars for 2 u 2
I love our Nissian Quest. We got it just before I found out I was pregnant with #2. DS and DD are 15.5 months apart. We needed a new car and didn't want to buy something we would likely outgrow before we paid it off.
We also have a Honda Accord. We could fit three seats in there, but it would not be nearly as convenient.
We have an 8-seater Toyota Sienna. I love it and there's a lot of room to grow (we want one or two more kids)!
If you're used to Toyota reliability, I'd stear clear of VW. Overpriced and repairs are expensive. The Routan, as I understand, is basically the same vehicle as the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country with more bells and whistles and a VW logo slapped on the front of it.
We have a 4Runner, so I'm probably not much help since I think if you were to have 3 kids, it would be pretty tight, if not impossible, to get in the carseats in the back row. BUT I have had 2 Toyotas now and I think you can't go wrong with the Sienna. I have loved both of my cars, never had a service issue and excellent quality.
I LOVE the GMC Acadia though, not a van, more of a crossover type car. Friends of ours have one and I think it's the best of everything.
i'm on the hunt for a new car as well. We have compared the toyota sienna to the honda odyssey and the odyssey is MUCH better between the two! I just can't make the commitment to a minivan just yet.
th new ford explorers have 3 LATCH systems (the two captain chairs of the 2nd row and 1 seat in the 3rd row). The acardia only had 2 if I remember correctly. The chevy traverse only had 2 as well (no LATCH in the 3rd row). Between these 3 we like the new ford explorer the best! The new ford explorers are completely redone and look nothing like the older models. They look more like a crossover suv now.
we also looked at the Toyota sequoia today and really liked it. Different models have different numbers of LATCH but basically it was either 2 or 3 LATCH available. I'm not sure I'm comfortable going that big on a vehicle (i'm used to small cars).
we looked at an Audi Q7 randomly b/c it was used on the car lot and my husband was curious. I have to admit we REALLY liked it. It was the only midsize suv we have found that has FOUR LATCH systems!!! Now if we can find a used one we can afford...lol!!
So for us (we want 4 kids) the options we are considering at the moment are the Odyssey, Sequoia, Audi Q7, and Ford Explorer...we are still on the hunt!

We had 3 criteria when looking for a car last May. 1. Safety; 2. AWD; 3. Fuel economy.
The only car that met those criteria and met our budget was the Subaru Legacy. It easily fits DS1's RF convertible and DS2's infant car seats in the back. The trunk is large enough for our double stroller and groceries. We are leaving tonight for SoCal for the weekend, and I don't anticipate a problem with packing.
If you're in the market for a sedan, definitely check it out. We get 35mpg and we've taken it through the snow and it handled like a CHAMP!!
