Nail biting help

DD has become a nail biter...I've tried ignoring it, telling her to stop, simply removing her hand from her mouth, giving her something to occupy her hands with, and the gross tasting nail polish...does anyone have any other ideas how to get her to stop? It's so gross

Re: Nail biting help

  • No, but if anyone has any other suggestions I would love them!  DS has been biting his nails since 18 months old.  He stopped for a short while not too long ago and we praised his extensively, but he recently started again.

  • We are finally making some progress using a sticker chart!

I started it a few months ago and told her if she got five stars, we could paint her toenails. Well, she somehow got it in her head that I said four stars, so that's what it became. She did really well the first four days and got four stars but then bit her nails on the fifth day, which derailed our efforts for a couple months. For Easter, I got her a Piggy Paint manicure set, which she was excited about but not motivated enough to stop biting.

Then, about two weeks ago, I decided to crack down again, and she got four stars right away, and we painted her toenails on the fifth day. Then we agreed that if she got four more stars, we could paint her fingernails. Again, she got four stars right away but apparently forgot about painting her nails because it's been a week and she hasn't even asked about it, but she hasn't been biting either. I've also been making a fuss about how nice her nails look and how I actually needed to clip some of them now that she's not biting them.

I'm hoping she sticks with it, because next I need to stop her other bad habit: nose-picking. Ew!

  • DS's nails grow so fast. I just try to stay on top of cutting them and that seems to help. If they get too long he'll bite/be reminded that they're there. When I do cut his nails I cut the ones he bites as well so they're all even. He sometimes thinks I will cut his finger off (because its so close to the skin) that he gets scared and will stop biting for a while. It's a frustrating habit!!
