1st Trimester

Is it safe to....

I'm 6 weeks pregnant after having two miscarriages last year so naturally, I am nervous as hell about this! Is it safe to...

  1. Go horseback riding (gentle trail ride)? We have a family vacation next week and I'm wondering if I should skip this altogether.
  2. Sit in a natural springs hot tub or take a hot bath?  I would assume that if I can take a hot shower then I can sit in a tub for awhile but what is the temperature threshold for 1st trimester? And are natural hot springs with minerals in them a bad idea or a good one?
  3. Go on a leisurely hike or brisk walk? So far I've read that any physical activity is okay as long as I keep my heart rate below 120 bpm. Can anyone else confirm that?
  4. Have 1 single beer or glass or wine? Just checking.
Bottom line is I'll do whatever it takes to make sure my baby is healthy and not born with two heads and lobster claws for hands. But I don't want to be a complete invalid either because I can't stand sitting still for too long. Thanks!

Re: Is it safe to....

  • The only thing I'd do is the walk.

    1. Horseback riding - I'd be less worried about the bumpiness and more worried about falling off or something if the horse gets spooked.

    2. You need stay under 100 degrees, which (for me) only feels warm, not hot. The hot springs I've been in are much hotter than that, and I only take baths with a thermometer.

    4. This early in your pregnancy is probably the worst time to risk a drink - and I wouldn't. No one knows for sure how much alcohol could affect the baby, and even if a little is safe, all I'd think about if something happened to our baby is what I did "wrong." So, to me, not worth the risk.

  • I would avoid the horsebacking riding, hot tub and alcohol if I were in your shoes.  Just because, for me, the risks would outweigh the benefits.  I was a HUGE wine drinker before my pregnancy and I've managed to find some 0% wine (it's no where near as good as the real thing, but it scratches my itch), maybe keep your eyes out for that so you don't feel as left out of the festivities.

I think hiking and walking is totally good for you though!

  • Thanks ladies! I'm just so nervous and I keep reading so much conflicting information out there.

Another question, is it safe to have sex at this time? My husband and I are both a bit freaked out by it right now b/c we are afraid that we might cause a miscarriage or something. I know people say it's perfectly safe but it still worries me at this early stage.

I would say have sex anytime you feel like sex, because you'll need to build up a reserve for all the times you won't. :)

    This exactly. I agree.

This exactly. As for sex...have at it if you are in the mood because when m/s kicks in you won't feel like it anymore Crying

  • no horseback riding or hot tubs.  i still take baths (ok'd by my ob).  hikes and walks are fine.  alcohol - definite no (some ob's approve 1 glass here or there but only in the 3rd tri).

when in doubt, just call your ob.

YES!  Sex is perfectly safe throughout pregnancy, unless you have a fetish that may cut off air supply.
