We have a Kindle but since DH and I are both readers, it makes sense to have two (living/working overseas you can't always get books in English or they're really expensive). I was thinking of getting him an eReader for our anniversary but I'm wondering if we should get another Kindle or try the Nook. I LOVE my Kindle, but I like the idea of the color screen and the fact that the Nook offers children's books (also hard to come by).
Thoughts? Has anyone used both? Any recommendations?
Re: NBR- Kindle vs. Nook
i love love love my kindle. it's the best e-reader in my opinion because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that i don't need and wouldn't use, but what it does have is strong. i love the battery life and how clear the e-ink is and that i don't get a glare when i read it outside. it's the perfect book replacement for me. i actually have two. i have a first generation that i got as a christmas gift from my husband and a 2nd generation for reading in the tub or when i had to travel a lot for work. that way if anything happened, i wasn't destroying the 1st christmas gift i received from DH
i love love love my kindle! (amazon is having a good summer reads sale right now). i like the whispersync i love the selection and battery life. i love i can read it with one hand while i have a sleeping baby in my arms. i love the price.
i'm tired of all of my electronics doing the same things, so i'm glad the kindle is simple and i use it strictly for book reading. i don't want to read Addy books on it though because i want her to love books like i do and not just electronic devices, so we'll still be using the giant board books for a long time.
I want to read real books to Rory too, but I'm thinking in terms of long plane rides and such.
My birthday is next week and I decided I wanted an eReader so that I can read while nursing, so I've recently done a lot of research. I decided on the 3rd generation Kindle with WiFi only. I don't need the 3G because I have plenty of access to internet when I want to buy books.
My reasons:
- Color is not important to me
- I want to be able to read outside and the glare in the nook color doesn't allow for that
- I plan to use it for reading only, not games or web-surfing (have my phone and computer for that)
- Kindle is smallest and lightest
- The Kindle's battery life is better
- Kindle turns on instantly, nook takes a few minutes to boot up
- Kindle WiFi is $110 cheaper than nook color
- The libraries are comparable and Kindle recently added a borrow feature
- Many of tech the reviews I read rated the Kindle as the best e-ink reader
There are definite pluses to both - the ipad is definitely best for magazine reading, games and internet. The nook color does all the same things as the ipad on a smaller scale. Check out this video - I found it very helpful in deciding which one to get:

All of this.
DH downloaded a program for me called caLibre - it allows you to download books in any format and covert them to the right type of file for your device. I have added about 6 or 7 free books to my kindle that work great!
I LOVE MY KINDLE. I had to wait for 10 weeks over Xmas for delivery and I have to pay shipping + duty + taxes on any accessories (my case for it was $45 alone!) and yet, it's still better than any e-reader I can get in Canada. I would absolutely get another if I had to choose!
