Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How much is too much to put your 2 week old in a baby swing for?

We just bought a new swing (Graco Swing) for my newborn and he loves it!  He will sleep in it and just sit contently in it for an hour or more at a time.  Is there any time that is too long for him to be in it?  Like 2 - 3 hours/day.   It is the only thing that soothes him.  I know this may be a silly question, but it comes from a nervous new mom.

  • I don't think so....as long as he is happy, why bother him? I think it's important that little babies like that get held a lot as well, but if he is content, I would think he's fine.

  • One thing I've learned in my short time as a mom is to go with whatever works.  I was totally against co-sleeping prior to having DD, but since that's the only way she'll sleep, that's what I do every night.  If she slept soundly in her swing for hours, I'd let her sleep there.
  • DD slept in the swing at night from 2w until 2.5months.  Since she slept in it at night we didn't use it other than that but she was in it all night 8hrs a day.  She became a great sleeper and it helped us so much.

  • Mine only likes the swing for about 20-30 minutes. ?I personally wouldn't think 2-3hrs per day was too long, if it were in intervals instead of one long stretch.
  • I don't think it's bad.  I know nurses un the NICU at our hospital have one swing they fight over to put the babies in because they will sleep so well when they are in it.  I would just try to make sure you adjust his head position so he doesn't get a flat spot.  I was always parinoid about that.
