3rd Trimester

Low amniotic fluid...

I just had an ultrasound and appointment today... I am 32 weeks. The doctor said everything looked good and my placenta has moved out of the way, which is why I got another ultrasound. As I was making my next appointment the doctor came out and asked to speak with me again, which scared me... but she told me that my amniotic fluid is "borderline low". She said 5 isn't good and right now I'm at like 8.5 so she wants to do another ultrasound in two weeks to check. This doctor wasn't the friendliest so I didn't ask questions, but I did just send the office a message asking if there's any precautions to take. I am just wondering if this is common or if anyone has experienced this as well. I'm trying to figure out what the risks are and how I can, if at all, get it back up to where it needs to be. TIA!

Re: Low amniotic fluid...

  • this happened to me last time around, i paniced a bit at first of course.  basically they will continue to monitor you.  Once i hit 36 wks my fluid was still low so i had to get 2 sonos a week just to keep an eye on it.  if it hits a very low point and you are past 36 wks they will talk to you about inducing you, nothing to be too concerned with at this point.  Just stay as hydrated as possible and talk to your doc when you go in the next time.  I had a few friends that had to do an overnight at the hospital too just to get fluids and keep an eye on them- not to scare you but let you know it happens....hang in there and try not to panic.

  • My fluid last week was 8.9, and my OB said to drink lots of fluids, and to rest a bit more.  I was back to 11.8 at this weeks appt, so I'm guessing all the fluids I have been drinking have been helping.  I'm going to keep it up, I don't want to be induced bc of low fluid!

  • I went to L&D for decreased movement last week and my fluid was "between 5-6".

I have been drinking water like a fish and it's back up to 9. Which is fine. It's not great, but it's withing normal limits. 8 is not that bad. Plus, there is a margin of error on these tests because baby moves and the position can affect the pockets. I am seen by a high-risk peri. and they are totally OK with the level of 9. I am getting NST though and baby has been passing with flying colors. In fact, today, they told me with the level of 9, that I technically won't even qualify for them anymore because it's a fine level.

Just keep hydrated, that is very important. Try not to worry too much, esp. because I don't think your limit is that bad at all.

FWIW, I had a level of 5.8 with DD at 38.5w. She also passed the NST with flying colors. I was induced anyway for other issues, but even that level was not overly alarming and cause for huge concern.

  • Probably a stupid question but can amniotic fluid only be gauged by ultrasound (not by "feel" so to speak?) - I was induced with my son because of low amniotic fluid at 41w2d but went to a different practice at the time.  My doctor now knows this and I'm not past due or anything but I haven't had an ultrasound since my anatomy scan/gender at like 18 weeks or something (January) and when I asked if I would be having any other ultrasounds she had said only if she thought the baby wasn't head down but that she's sure she (baby) is head down.

I didn't want to be an idiot and ask for an ultrasound if this is something they can get a feel for during external/internal exams but I have an appt Friday and if it's an ultrasound-only thing I might ask for one so we can be safe.  My induction with DS was long and a bit traumatic for both of us (physically - emotionally it was fine) so I want to make sure we're all safe & sound this go-round!

  • I've been at 8 AFI since 24 weeks. The best thing you can do for yourself is to drink a TON of water a day. The more the better, up to 2 gallons. And rest whenever possible. The best being laying on your left side.

They will probably monitor you via ultrasound every 2 weeks.

I was an 8 at 24 and 26 weeks and I go for my next check on Thursday so hoping it hasn't gotten any lower.

If it gets to 5 or below, they may induce you.

Good luck and keep me posted!!!

They caught mine by chance because they had to recheck a measurement they couldn't get at 20 week anatomy scan, but I was also measuring 3-4 weeks behind on my fundal height, so the dr. said if they hadn't have caught it by chance, they would've sent me for a growth scan given how I was all the sudden measuring behind...

  • My problem was the opposite and I was on the high side.  I asked if it was something I was doing and it wasn't but they did say that if it was on the low side that I should be making sure I was drinking enough and staying hydrated.  Not sure how much you're drinking now but see if you can increase it.  In my case it resolved itself and while I'm still on the high end of normal, I'm not out of range now.  Good luck!
