Quilters: I need some advice

I'm finally finishing up ds' dinosaur quilt. It's not perfect but he likes it and is excited for me to finish it up. I want to make a quilt for our bed for the winter. I have the fabric so far for the top. I'm thinking that it won't fit in my machine when it comes time to sandwich and quilt it. Should I try to quilt it block by block and then piece it together or should I take it to a quilting shop and pay them to quilt it using their long arm machine? And if I go for the pay option can they do any type of design I want (is it computer assisted?)? I want our quilt to look nice. DS will probably only use this one for play so I don't see it lasting incredibly long.

  • I would take it to a quilt shop to get it done. They can do almost design that you want if they have the right machine. There are also people on etsy that will quilt it for you as well for a bit cheaper than the quilt shop might do it. How big is your machine? Some machines will do up to a queen sized quilt.

I've never tried quilting each block and then piecing it together. Would you then put another piece of fabric on the back to hide the seams?

    Good luck!

  • I would definitely take it to a shop and have it quilted. You can pick the thread, the design, everything. Usually a basic meander quilting is a standard rate (based on quilt size) and then you pay a little more for extras, but you could have them quilt his name into it, or something fun like that, or get a fun thread, like something multicolored. They can usually make recommendations if you're not sure what you want done. It's amazing what they can do, and they are usually pretty fast if you set up an appointment to have it done.

Please post pics of your finished product :)!

  • I have a brother xl3030. I don't think a king size quilt will fit in there when it comes time to quilt it up. I'll check out etsy as well when it comes time to quilt it up. I'll get ours done by someone else. And I'll post pics of DS quilt as well. I hope to finish it this week.
