3rd Trimester

GBS test...who's done it already?

At my last doctor's appointment I was told I would have to have a group B Strep test done at 35 weeks. Of those of you who have already had this test done, what's it like. I mean, is it very uncomfortable and what exactly does it consist of? TIA Smile

  • It's nothing. Kinda like a pap smear. Like level 1 on the pain scale. No worries.

Doc:  "if you don't take your clothes off, I can't preform the test!"

I failed....well, came up positive, so  I will have to have meds when I deliver????  I forgot to ask.

  • They basically swab you with a qtip. No big deal.

  • Yeah. It's done and over with a cotton swab before you even know what's going on. I chatted with the dr. about the weather during it. You won't hardly notice what he's doing. It takes like 2.5 seconds.
  • You need IV penicillin (or clindamycin usually if you're PCN allergic) - minimum 2 doses, 4 hrs apart, during labor.

I think they will give you antibiotics during delivery, but I could be totally wrong.  Ask your doc at the next appt.

This is correct, they will be through and IV, no big deal at all. They might just tell you to take less time when deciding to go to the hospital so you make sure you get there in time to recieve them is all. I'm sure they will go over it with you : )

Yes, ask your doctor when you need to get to the hospital.. I was told as soon as my water breaks. Others have been told to just come once contractions reach a certain point, and even other have been told to just call when their water breaks. Surely your doctor will tell you which one you need to do.. from what I understand I'll just go when my water breaks & they'll administer IV antibiotics. I haven't been told what kind of antibiotics yet.

  • The internal exam she did after the GBS swab was about 100 times worse. Didn't even feel the swab.

Thanks, Ladies. This makes me feel much better about the whole thing. Just hoping it comes back negative. Fingers crossed. :-)

Yep, this.  Just a heads up I had my first internal that day too since my dr was already down there.  I was 34 weeks.  My internals have never hurt or caused me spotting.  GL!

    This exactly.
I had my GBS test done at 33 weeks bc they think LO is coming early. The result is good for about 5 weeks and if she doesn't come by 38 weeks then I'll probably have to have the test done again. No biggie.

  • For mine they only swabbed my girl parts, not my rectum. No big deal.

This. It probably last 3-4 seconds and is completely painless. I barely felt it.

  • My midwife practice has you do it yourself.  Nothing to it, and much less uncomfortable than a pap in my opinion.
