how do you organize your photos?

I am sure, like me, you take tons of photos of your LOs. With the advent of the digital cameras, it's so easy to take hundreds of photos in a day lol. How do you organize your photos? What do you do with them? Do you order prints and put in an album or make a photobook (how often - monthly, quarterly, yearly)? How often and where do you back up your files? I have to put some order in all my photos before it gets too many to manage.

Re: how do you organize your photos?

  • How do you organize your photos? They're all digital, and I have them separated into folders - for example, I have a "first year" folder that then contains weekly subfolders ("1 week", "2 weeks" etc.).

Because I do post processing on my favorite photos, which I like to keep separate from the raw images, I actually have two of those yearly folders (one for raw images, one for processed images). Overkill I know, lol!

What do you do with them? Mostly I just store 'em. Some I upload, some I email, some I post on my blog, some I turn into photobooks...but mostly they just sit there. Embarrassed

Do you order prints and put in an album or make a photobook (how often - monthly, quarterly, yearly)? I pretty much never get prints. I have a grand total of one canvas photo hanging in the house, and that's because my Dad and stepmom got it for me. It's not that I don't want to do more - I just never seem to get around to it! (I think most people would be shocked at how un-decorated our home is lol.)

    I do yearly photobooks, though.

How often and where do you back up your files? I have them saved in three physical places: my laptop, my external harddrive and our file server. I update folders a few times a month. I should really save good copies online (not just the resized, watermarked images that I use on my blog) as well...

  • I just back up to an external hard drive.  I made a photo book through Blurb of photos from Kaya's 1st year.  Actually, I started with u/s photos and our maternity photos up to her 1st birthday.  Next year I'll just do from after her birthday through her 2nd birthday.  I didn't use nearly as many photos as I took but I used the best ones.  Otherwise, I just have them in folders by date.  I have printed out a bunch but haven't done anything with them yet.

  • For family functions and events, I keep separate folders. For example, Memorial Day 2011. For everyday cassie photos, I have one large folder named Everyday Cassie and then subfolders labeled with a date and description. For ex. 06.03.11 | The Zoo. The plan was to burn to a CD and print a few favorites at the end of each month but that just has not happened. I do backup to an external hardrive though. Not sure if you caught the post on my blog re: Project Life....but it has been one of my favorite projects this year! I don't think it's currently being sold right now but you should definitely take a look into it when it becomes available again later this year. Google 'Project Life Becky Higgins' if you're interested :)

  • How do you organize your photos?

right now I organize them by month.... month 1,2, 3, etc. but each folder is also labeled by date i.e. month 1 (11.12.09 - 12.12.09)

What do you do with them?

right now they just sit there Embarrassed we have 1000+ images from each month but I have yet to put an album together. I do sort through them and post images to FB but otherwise, I haven't done much!

Do you order prints and put in an album or make a photobook (how often- monthly, quarterly, yearly)?

I'd like to do an album for each year of her life but she's 1.5 now and I still don't have one for year 1.... i think if I don't get on it soon they will never get done :(

How often and where do you back up your files?

our photos get uploaded to the server directly from the memory card...the server is set up to clone each file as it is uploaded into a back up server so we never have to worry about creating back ups. (DH set this all up)

  • I have two accounts - one on Shutterfly & one on Walgreens, and there I just have my baby's photos seperated by month. Since I use both of those websites often, I usually order prints whenever they are having a special. I keep albums & I scrapbook, too. Just an fyi, Shutterfly is a great website to store & order pictures from. I originally starting using that website bc their shipping isn't ridiculously expensive like most places are to ship to Hawaii & you get 50 free prints when you first join. Their pictures are of really good quality, too! Hope this helps. Also, in my craft room I have the hard copies of his pictures stored in Rubbermaid shoe containers to help with organization. :)

this is what i am worried about! that's why i need to get started before the photos get out of control.Sad

  • I don't do photobooks, etc.  I really don't have time, but I figure if I save them in an organized way I can work on that *someday*  I am just happy that I have managed to regularly download/upload and save on an external hard drive.

I print my favorite pictures at costco about once a month, 2-3 copies. I add them to a boring old fashioned photo album I keep in the living room, stuffing pictures in when I watch TV.  Then the other copy is for frames at work, around the house, and I give a copy to my grandparents (since they don't have facebook).

I'm working on a scrapbook of J's first birthday because someone got him a cute mickey mouse scrap book and stickers/paper as a gift.  And we paid for the photopass when we were at disneyland so we have quite a few fun pictures.

I am pretty good about editing videos on my mac and made a 1 year dvd movie and have burned DVDs of unedited clips.
